Marvel Studios Has “Zero” Plans for ‘Deadpool’ Right Now, Says Creator Rob Liefeld
This past weekend I revisited Logan, 20th Century Fox’s R-rated X-Men spinoff that violently kicked open the door for Marvel’s Deadpool to make it to the big screen. Deadpool would become a monstrously successful franchise that introduced not only the famed assassin, but several other classic Marvel comic characters from Domino to Cable. Fans seemed destined to be gifted with more ultra-violent sequels… at least until Disney purchased Fox.
The big acquisition led to even larger questions; would Disney allow 20th Century Studios to develop and release a third R-rated Deadpool film and, if not, would they at least mix the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
Late last year, Ryan Reynolds, who starred as the foul-mouthed antihero, had reassured fans that another Deadpool was in the cards. “Yeah, we’re working on it right now with the whole team,” he stated on Live with Kelly and Ryan. “We’re over at Marvel [Studios] now, which is like the big leagues all of a sudden. It’s kinda crazy. So yeah, we’re working on it.”
Rob Liefeld, artist/creator of Deadpool, Cable and Domino, says the opposite, appearing on Inverse late last week and telling fans that Marvel Studios has “zero” plans for the character.
“I can’t gloss it up,” he intensely exclaimed. “You want to know the plan with Deadpool right now? They have a goose egg, zero, zero.”
“They” being Marvel Studios, who Liefeld would go off on prior to his Deadpool update.
“I’m not really that crazy about Marvel’s plan right now,” said Liefeld. “It’s the first time I go, ‘Hey, [Kevin] Feige, did you even have a plan? Your plan was ‘Eternals’ and ‘Shang-Chi’? That was your plan? And Black Widow?’ So they close the door, Chris Evans says goodbye, Robert Downey Jr. says goodbye, Black Widow falls off a cliff says goodbye, they almost lose [Spider-Man actor] Tom Holland to Sony… but you’re a genius, Marvel, you’re geniuses.”
The first Deadpool grossed $782M worldwide, while its sequel also managed an astounding $785M. It seems crazy for Marvel Studios to completely abandon the franchise or even the character, and maybe some of this is tied to the ongoing pandemic. No matter, Ryan Reynolds’ optimistic effort is what helped Deadpool make it to the big screen in the first place, and maybe, just maybe it’s also what helps keep him alive and kicking?

‘Hot Spot’ Trailer – Noomi Rapace Stars as a Cyber Witch in Dystopian Sci-Fi Thriller From ‘The Lure’ Director
A cyber witch gets embroiled in a murder mystery in the wild new trailer for Hot Spot.
From The Lure director Agnieszka Smoczyńska, the dystopian sci-fi thriller will be released in North American theaters on August 21 via Focus Features.
The genre-bending film is set in “a near future society ruled by sentient AI, where a private eye investigates a murder case, only to discover a rebel group capable of undermining the digital overlord.”
Andrzej Konopka (The Lure), Noomi Rapace (Prometheus), and Reika Kirishima (Drive My Car) star.
Robert Bolesto (The Lure) wrote the screenplay.
“To me, ‘Hot Spot’ is a story where the main feeling is fear, just like in a horror movie. And in today’s world,” Bolesto previously told Variety. Smoczyńska describes the new project as a “personal blend of horror, science fiction and anti-detective story,” signaling another unique genre-bender from the filmmaker.
The project was developed with the support of The Sundance Institute, which presented Smoczyńska with its 2017 Global Filmmaking Award.
Producers include Klaudia Smieja-Rostworowska at Poland’s Madants, who produced Claire Denis’ High Life and Agnieszka Holland’s Mr Jones, alongside Before Midnight producer Christos V. Konstantakopoulos at Greek production outfit Faliro House.
Hot Spot will open against Insidious: Out of the Further.
Also on the way from Focus Features is Robert Eggers’ Werwulf on December 25.
