‘Spawn’ Reboot: Blumhouse Working “to Get the Story Right”
It’s now been three years since Blumhouse came aboard Todd McFarlane‘s long-gestured Spawn reboot and it’s still yet to gain any real momentum. It’s unclear what’s been going on behind the scenes, but McFarlane’s openly-expressed demands are the kind of requests that are a non-starter for most companies.
McFarlane has been publicly filibustering as to the progress, openly revealing his demands to direct for an R-rating, while also demanding to use his screenplay, which he’s actually relaxed on over the past year. This is good news because his draft needs a ton of work, and it sounds as if Blumhouse has convinced the artist-turned-filmmaker to concede.
Blumhouse head honcho Jason Blum recently spoke with Inverse about the project, revealing that they are still working on getting the story right.
“It’s taken longer than I hoped it would have to get the story right, but we’re still working on it,” Blum told the site.
“It’s gonna be very different, it’s gonna be very edgy,” he added. “What excited me about it is that Spawn is kind of the last great unexploited comic. So that seemed like an amazing opportunity.”
McFarlane has been pushing the boulder up a mountain for years. It appeared to be sitting at the very top after locking down Blumhouse as producers with Jamie Foxx attached to star as the title character and Jeremy Renner as Detective Twitch.
This past May, Blum had teased an unknown “seismic event on Spawn.”
As noted in the initial release, “Spawn” was the first massive launchpad for Image Comics in May of 1992. New Line Cinema would adapt the comic in 1997 with Michael Jai White starring as an elite mercenary who is killed but comes back from Hell as a reluctant soldier of the Devil. He starred alongside John Leguizamo. A “Spawn” animated series also ran from 1997-1999, totaling 18 episodes.
