There was a war. And they’re the last ones standing.

Director Adam Wingard‘s Godzilla vs. Kong, the mashup fight film that Legendary’s MonsterVerse has spent years building towards, is coming to theaters and HBO Max on March 26, and as promised, the official trailer has just been unleashed this afternoon.

It looks like the film begins with King Kong being captured and taken off Skull Island, apparently being used by Monarch to help take down an increasingly destructive Godzilla. The only person Kong will communicate with is a mysterious young child, but of course, everything goes awry when the Big G inevitably shows up. And that’s when things get really, really fun.

The trailer runs just over 2-minutes long and it’s loaded with battle action, all of it looking as visually stunning as we’ve learned to expect from the MonsterVerse movies. And it looks like Adam Wingard definitely brought his own style into the mix with this one, with the visual mayhem including cyberpunk backdrops and gleefully bonkers fight sequences. And yes, Kong does in fact turn one of Godzilla’s dorsal plates into a battle axe, leveling the playing field and bringing the axe down onto Godzilla’s head in the final moments of this glorious first look.

Check out the awesome trailer below! And here’s the new plot synopsis…

“Legends collide as these mythic adversaries meet in a spectacular battle for the ages, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. Kong and his protectors undertake a perilous journey to find his true home, and with them is Jia, a young orphaned girl with whom he has formed a unique and powerful bond. But they unexpectedly find themselves in the path of an enraged Godzilla, cutting a swath of destruction across the globe. The epic clash between the two titans—instigated by unseen forces—is only the beginning of the mystery that lies deep within the core of the Earth.”

Godzilla vs. Kong is the fourth film in the MonsterVerse, which kicked off with Godzilla in 2014 and continued with Kong: Skull Island in 2017 and Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019.

Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Kyle Chandler star.

Writer in the horror community since 2008. Editor in Chief of Bloody Disgusting. Owns Eli Roth's prop corpse from Piranha 3D. Has four awesome cats. Still plays with toys.

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
