‘Orphan: First Kill’ Trailer – There Was Always Something Very, Very Wrong With Esther…
Esther is back in brand new Orphan prequel movie Orphan: First Kill, and the trailer has announced today that it’s coming to select theaters, Digital, and Paramount+ on August 19!
Isabelle Fuhrman is reprising the role of Esther thanks to clever production trickery, and William Brent Bell (The Boy, Separation) stepped into the director’s chair for First Kill.
Reunite with Esther by watching the Orphan: First Kill trailer below. This one looks like more of the same, but it really is quite impressive how they managed to de-age Fuhrman. Esther is a great character, and it’s great to see her back well over 10 years after the first movie!
“Esther’s terrifying saga continues in this thrilling prequel to the original and shocking horror hit, Orphan. After orchestrating a brilliant escape from an Estonian psychiatric facility, Esther travels to America by impersonating the missing daughter of a wealthy family.
“Yet, an unexpected twist arises that pits her against a mother who will protect her family from the murderous “child” at any cost.”
Rossif Sutherland and Julia Stiles star alongside Isabelle Fuhrman.
David Coggeshall (“Scream: The TV Series”) wrote the script.
Orphan: First Kill is rated “R” for bloody violence, language and brief sexual content, so you can expect to see Esther bash in some heads. The film’s official runtime is listed at 99 minutes.
How exactly did the team de-age Isabelle Fuhrman, you ask?
Fuhrman explained to THR last year, “I love the challenge of being able to play a kid because that’s never historically been done in cinema — I was like looking all this up, because I love looking up old movie history and things like that, and I was like, ‘Oh, an adult has never reprised the role that they played as a child,’ Will Smith, for example, recently did that movie [Gemini Man] where they de-age somebody, but to reprise a role that you literally did as a kid as an adult has never been done before. It’s kind of impossible. And we did it.”
The actress continued, “We didn’t use special effects, we didn’t use any crazy makeup tricks. And I think that’s what makes the movie work, is because you really can’t figure out how I look like a [9-year-old], but I do. And it’s really creepy.
“I was there every day. I know all the tricks, and I’m so thoroughly disturbed right now, because I somehow am nine years old again, and it doesn’t make any sense… I was like, how do I revisit this part and then also convincingly play a kid? Because that was the easy part last time, the hard part was trying to be an adult. Now the hard part is I have to be kid.”

Two things that have proven to be pretty dependable at the box office in recent years are horror movies and Christopher Nolan movies. With Nolan’s The Odyssey absolutely dominating the box office this past weekend, many fans of Nolan’s work have been left hungry for a Nolan-directed horror movie. After all, The Odyssey does whet the appetite for Nolan nightmare fuel.
Christopher Nolan has brushed up against the horror genre in the past with 2002 thriller Insomnia, but does he have any interest in someday making a full-on horror movie?
Nolan tells the Empire Podcast in a new chat, “I’ve always been interested in doing a horror film.”
“But horror is most successful when the conceptual framework of whatever the story is is just so undeniable. I think there are very few really great horror movies,” Nolan continues.
So why hasn’t Christopher Nolan directed a horror movie yet?
He explains to Empire, “I’ve never clicked with a particular idea or concept that worked for me. I love the genre. Of all genres, it’s the most visceral. Where the direct response to the audience is the most important. That is to say, you’re trying to make people literally feel something in their bones about what’s going on on-screen.”
Nolan calls horror “a genre in which experimentation is demanded.” He explains, “I go to see a lot of horror films with my kids these days, and you’ll see things in the first half an hour, 45 minutes of any horror film that you’d never see in another genre. Risks that are taken. Dangerous approaches to things. Admittedly, a lot of movies can’t sustain that to the end. But in the horror genre, that kind of innovation is not just respected – it’s really demanded.”
