There are currently a handful of horror movies playing in theaters, including Nope, Beast, and Orphan: First Kill, and another brand new one is being added to the mix this week.

This week is a bit of a quiet one all around on the horror front, but with the Halloween season fast approaching, we promise you this is merely the quiet before the spooky storm…

Here’s all the new horror arriving August 22 – August 28, 2022!

First up, we may be a couple months away from Halloween but a new indie horror movie titled The Day After Halloween kicks off the season on VOD this Tuesday, August 23rd.

The film is being billed as “The Hangover meets horror.”

Directed by Chad Ostrom, and written by Danny Schluck, “this frighteningly fun genre treat sees two lifelong buddies forced to unravel the circumstances that led to a corpse in their bathtub in the wake of a Halloween party.”

On the small screen this week, Danny DeVito and Aubrey Plaza star in FX’s animated horror-comedy series “Little Demon,” produced by “Rick & Morty” co-creator Dan Harmon.

The series was created by Darcy Fowler, Seth Kirschner and Kieran Valla.

“In Little Demon, 13 years after being impregnated by the Devil (Danny DeVito), a reluctant mother (Plaza) and her Antichrist daughter (Lucy DeVito) attempt to live an ordinary life in Delaware, but are constantly thwarted by monstrous forces, including Satan, who yearns for custody of his daughter’s soul.”

Naturally, you can expect blood, guts, and a whole lot of high strange weirdness…

This week’s new big screen horror movie is The Invitation (formerly titled The Bride), a Dracula-inspired horror movie coming to theaters from Screen Gems this Friday, August 26th.

Described as “a contemporary horror thriller,” The Invitation tells “the story of a young woman who is courted and swept off her feet, only to realize a gothic conspiracy is afoot.”

That “gothic conspiracy,” it turns out, involves blood-drinking, with Evie drawn into a world of vampires. This is very much a Dracula tale, only with a fresh new twist to it.

Here’s the full plot synopsis: “After the death of her mother and having no other known relatives, Evie (Nathalie Emmanuel) takes a DNA test…and discovers a long-lost cousin she never knew she had. Invited by her newfound family to a lavish wedding in the English countryside, she’s at first seduced by the sexy aristocrat host.

“But Evie is soon thrust into a nightmare of survival as she uncovers twisted secrets in her family’s history and the unsettling intentions behind their sinful generosity.”

Nathalie Emmanuel (“Game of Thrones”), Thomas Doherty (“Gossip Girl”), Hugh Skinner, Sean Pertwee, Courtney Taylor, Alana Boden, and Stephanie Corneliussen star.

Another shark attack horror movie is swimming our way this week, with Saban Films releasing Maneater into select theaters, Digital and On Demand on August 26, 2022.

That was the idea when Jesse’s friends convinced her to not let a broken engagement stand in the way of enjoying her prepaid honeymoon. Their sorrows weren’t the only thing going to drown on their trip especially with a man-eating shark swimming just below the surface.”

And finally, it’s not exactly a horror movie but Julius Avery (Overlord) is back with Samaritan this Friday, the Sylvester Stallone superhero thriller coming to Amazon Prime Video.

“Based on an original idea, the thriller centers on a young boy who is out to discover if a mythic superhero, who vanished 20 years earlier following a tragic event, is still alive.”

“This is a big event movie – we see our heroes kicking ass,” Avery had recently told Total Film. “We’re going to see Sly do things he hasn’t done in a long time, and in a really inventive way. He’s 73 years old! I’m amazed by how much he actually does. I’m telling you, most guys in their twenties wouldn’t be able to do what Sly does in this movie.”
