Kevin Smith Teases Plans for Horror Sequel ‘Red State 2’
Writer/Director Kevin Smith made his first foray into horror in 2011 with Red State, centering on a fundamentalist group with a sinister agenda. Could a sequel finally be on the way?
The answer may indeed be yes! /Film reports that Smith announced plans for Red State 2 while promoting Clerks III at a recent screening.
Smith revealed that it was Lionsgate, who also distributed Clerks III, who reached out about a potential sequel, “They were like, if we do this, would you do it again? And I was like, yeah, in a heartbeat. […] I mean, obviously, Michael Parks is gone. But it’s just a story of crazy people with guns and s*** like that. As long as I could use John Goodman again. I could make a hundred f****** Red States. And I’m like, let’s do it. So we’re gonna make one.”
While no actual plans or a script are currently in place, it’s interesting to note Lionsgate’s keen interest in pursuing the project with Smith.
The thriller starred Academy Award winner Melissa Leo and Golden Globe winner John Goodman (10 Cloverfield Lane), alongside Michael Parks (Kill Bill: Vol 1 and 2), Kyle Gallner (Smile) and Kevin Pollak (The Usual Suspects).
About Smith’s 2011 horror movie: “Three teenage boys are lured to the town of Cooper’s Dell with the promise of a party. But instead of enjoying the night of their dreams, the teens are plunged into the nightmarish world of Pastor Abin Cooper and the Five Points Trinity, a fundamentalist group with a stockpile of weaponry and a deadly moral agenda. When word of the teens’ disappearance reaches the authorities, a military task force is mobilized. Brendan Fraser is back for the upcoming fourth installment in The Mummy franchise from directors Radio Silence, and Michael Johnston (Obsession) is now in talks to join him.
The Hollywood Reporter lets us know tonight that Michael Johnston is in “early talks” to join The Mummy 4, which will release in theaters on October 15, 2027 via Universal.
Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, and John Hannah will reprise their iconic roles as Rick O’Connell, Evelyn O’Connell, and Jonathan Carnahan in the upcoming movie.
Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett (Ready or Not, Scream 5-6) are directing from a script by David Coggeshall (Orphan: First Kill).
Plot details are being kept under wraps at this time, but the brand new sequel is expected to disregard the events of the third movie, in which Rachel Weisz did not appear.
“It’s just really beautiful and scary and sweeping, and it’s awesome,” Gillet teases. Bettinelli-Olpin adds that the film “has all of the heart and the character that you could hope for.”
A remake of the classic Universal monster movie that took an action-adventure approach, The Mummy was released in 1999 and grossed $417 million worldwide. It was followed by The Mummy Returns in 2001 and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008.
