‘The Exorcist: Believer’ – Brand New Official Trailer Spits Up Pea Soup and Drags Two Girls Straight to Hell
For the first time since 2005, The Exorcist franchise is back up on the big screen this Halloween in The Exorcist: Believer, and a brand new official trailer has arrived today.
This second trailer for the upcoming horror movie begins with a preview of the legacy sequel approach, bringing Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn) back into the mix. “Are you looking for Regan?” a demonically possessed young girl screams at MacNeil. “She burns in hell.”
We then jump back in time to meet the two young girls at the center of The Exorcist: Believer, who will both become possessed by a demon. Who will survive? What will be left of them?
David Gordon Green directed the brand new sequel to The Exorcist for Universal, Blumhouse and Morgan Creek that will pave the way for a new trilogy. This first film in the trilogy will now be released theatrically on October 6, 2023, with Leslie Odom Jr. starring.
Here’s the full plot synopsis…
“Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom, Jr.) has raised their daughter Angela (Lidya Jewett) on his own.
“But when Angela and her friend Katherine (Olivia Marcum) disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn).”
Ann Dowd (Hereditary), Raphael Sbarge (“Gaslit”), and Jennifer Nettles (The Righteous Gemstones) will also star.
Peter Sattler (Broken Diamonds) and Gordon Green wrote the script for Believer, which features a story by Green, Scott Teems (Halloween Kills) and Danny McBride (Halloween).
The Exorcist franchise hasn’t been on the big screen since the 2005 release of Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist, an alternate version of the previous year’s Exorcist: The Beginning. Those films came in the wake of 1977’s The Exorcist II: The Heretic and 1990’s The Exorcist III.
More recently, “The Exorcist” became a short-lived television series at Fox, which was surprisingly excellent and cleverly took place in the same world as the original classic.
The classic tale of Hansel & Gretel has been brought to the screen a handful of times over the years, and now an upcoming stop motion animated film has attracted some A-list talent.
Variety reports that Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar) and Lars Knudsen have boarded the Hansel & Gretel movie as executive producers through their company Square Peg.
Chilean filmmakers Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña (The Hyperboreans) are directing. Variety notes, “The story is expected to twist the fairy tale into inimitable shapes.”
The duo co-directed the stop motion movie The Wolf House back in 2018, and they also worked in the animation department on Ari Aster’s most recent movie, Beau Is Afraid.
“It’s our very personal adaptation of the classic fairy tale, with the main difference that Hansel and Gretel are both boys in this version, at least at the beginning of the story,” Cristóbal León explained. In this telling, “the story itself gets lost,” León added.
“Cociña and León are among the true originals working in animation right now. You can trace their sensibility back to several artists of the uncanny, but there is no real analogue for the effect that their work produces in the viewer,” Aster told the website.
