October 6, 2023: These 10 New Horror Movies Just Released Today

You know it’s October when more than fifteen horror movies release in a single week. In the wake of this past Tuesday’s seven new movies, ten more have been unleashed today alone.

The franchise’s first movie in 20 years, The Exorcist: Believer is now playing in theaters nationwide, the first film in a planned trilogy of legacy sequels from Universal, Blumhouse, and Morgan Creek, and director David Gordon Green (Halloween).

Here’s the full plot synopsis for The Exorcist: Believer

“Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom, Jr.) has raised their daughter Angela (Lidya Jewett) on his own.

“But when Angela and her friend Katherine (Olivia Marcum) disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn).”

Peter Sattler (Broken Diamonds) and Gordon Green wrote the script for Believer, which features a story by Green, Scott Teems (Halloween Kills) and Danny McBride (Halloween).


Pet Sematary Bloodlines trailer

Paramount+ takes us back to Ludlow, Maine this Halloween with original prequel movie Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, the untold chapter from Stephen King’s classic novel.

The film is now streaming on Paramount+.

The untold chapter’s official synopsis: “In 1969, a young Jud Crandall has dreams of leaving his hometown of Ludlow, Maine behind, but soon discovers sinister secrets buried within and is forced to confront a dark family history that will forever keep him connected to Ludlow. Banding together, Jud and his childhood friends must fight an ancient evil that has gripped Ludlow since its founding, and once unearthed has the power to destroy everything in its path.”

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines stars Jackson White (Tell Me LiesMrs. FletcherForrest Goodluck (The Revenant), Jack Mulhern (The Boys in the Boat, “Mare of Easttown”), Henry Thomas (“The Fall of the House of Usher”, Gerald’s Game), Natalie Alyn Lind (“The Goldbergs”, “The Gifted”) and Isabella Star LaBlanc (“True Detective: Night Country”), with Pam Grier (CinnamonJackie Brown) and David Duchovny (“Californication”).

The film is directed by Lindsey Anderson Beer, her directorial debut, with a script written by Beer and Jeff Buhler, and produced by  Lorenzo di Bonaventura, and Mark Vahradian.


Totally Killer exclusive clip

From Blumhouse and director Nahnatchka Khan (Always Be My Maybe, Young Rock, Don Wong), the slasher-comedy Totally Killer is now streaming on Prime Video.

The film stars Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Mad Men), Olivia Holt (Cruel Summer), Julie Bowen (Modern FamilyLife of the Party), and Randall Park (Always Be My Maybe, Fresh off the Boat). Jen D’Angelo penned the screenplay based on an original script by David Matalon and Sasha Perl-Raver.

The film follows Jamie (Shipka) whose mom, Pam (Bowen) is terrorized by the resurgence of the Sweet Sixteen Killer—a masked maniac that slaughtered a group of teenage girls in the ‘80s. With the help of her friend Amelia (Kelcey Mawema), she travels back in time to 1987 and teams up with the teen version of her mom (Holt) to try and stop the killer.

The cast of newcomers and established actors portraying characters in the film include Lochlyn Munro (“Adult Blake”), Charlie Gillespie (“Teen Blake”), Stephi Chin-Salvo (“Marisa Song”), Anna Diaz (“Heather Hernandez”), Jeremy Monn-Djasgnar (“Teen Randy Finkle”), Troy Leigh-Anne Johnson (“Teen Lauren”), Ella Choi (“Teen Kara Molnar”), Kelcey Mawema (“Amelia”), Liana Liberato (“Tiffany Clark”), Nathaniel Appiah (“Teen Doug Summers”), and Jonathan Potts (“Adult Chris Dubusage”).


V/H/S/85 Scott Derrickson

Shudder, Studio71, Cinepocalypse & Bloody Disgusting are this time rewinding all the way back to the 1980s with V/H/S/85, which is now streaming exclusively on Shudder.

In V/H/S/85, “Unveiled through a made-for-TV documentary, five chilling tales emerge: scientists observe an unusual boy fixated on his TV, kids embark on a lake skiing adventure, a TV crew fights to survive a natural disaster, the early days of VR awaken something terrifying, and a deadly dream is captured on tape.

“Sinister secrets of the 1980s come to life in a way you’ve never seen before.”

The lineup of filmmakers for brand new installment V/H/S/85 includes David Bruckner, Scott Derrickson, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Natasha Kermani, and Mike P. Nelson.

V/H/S/85 joins our growing franchise that now consists of several films, including V/H/S, V/H/S/2, V/H/S: Viral, V/H/S/94, V/H/S/99, and the spinoff feature SiREN.


When Evil Lurks

After terrifying audiences with Terrified back in 2017, filmmaker Demián Rugna is back with new horror movie When Evil Lurks, and it’s now playing in theaters this week.

The film will be coming to Shudder on October 27, 2023.

In the film, “a pair of brothers find a mutilated corpse near their property and convene with the locals to suss it out. They soon learn that the odd happenings in their village are the cause of a spirit that’s found its way into a local man waiting for the proper protocols to rid his body of the festering demon. An escape attempt ensues as the film keeps its protagonists on edge, racing against imminent danger to shake the spirit’s relentless clutches.”

Ezequiel Rodriguez, Demián Salomon, Luis Ziembrowski, Silvia Sabater and Marcelo Michinaux star.

Director Demián Rugna said in a statement, “Working with Shudder has been an incredible and seamless experience. They allowed me the creative space to direct freely with the same goal in mind – identify new ways to shock and scare audiences with an innovative approach and a fresh story.”


Mongolian horror film Aberrance is now playing in select theaters, which is notable because it’s actually the first Mongolian horror feature to be released theatrically in the U.S.

The video on demand (VOD) and digital release will follow in 2024.

In Aberrance, when city dwellers Erkhmee and Selenge arrive at an old cabin deep in the Mongolian wilds, a sense of foreboding settles over the couple. Erkhmee’s seemingly keen desire to provide a safe and nurturing space for his artistic wife is at odds with the violent actions and mannerisms their quizzical neighbor observes. As the neighbor digs deeper for the reason behind this aberrant behavior, only more questions and trouble arise.

Aberrance is the theatrical directing debut film by Baatar Batsukh who also co-wrote the film with Erdene Orosoo (Kinsman of the Sun) and Byambasuren Ganbat.

The film stars an ensemble Mongolian cast of Selenge Chadraabal (Six Feet), Erkhembayar GanbatYalalt Namsrai (Snowman), Oyundary Jamsranjav (Disorder), Badamtsetseg Batmunkh, Bayarsanaa Batchuluun and Ariunbyamba Sukhee (Guardians). The film was produced by Enkhmandakh Nemekhbaatar and executive produced by Angarag Sukhbaatar, Trevor Morgan Doyle and Alexa Khan of Three Flames Pictures and Team Hero Production.


Fresh off this year’s Children of the Corn reboot, Elena Kampouris stars in the horror movie Vindicta, which Paramount’s Republic Pictures brought to Digital today.

In the film from director Sean McNamara (Soul Surfer, Spare Parts)…

“When a city is terrorized by a sadistic serial killer, a seasoned detective and a newly recruited paramedic are forced into a deadly game of vengeance, only to discover the key to stopping the bloodshed lies in unlocking the truth of their own haunted pasts.”

Sean Astin (“Stranger Things”) and Jeremy Piven (“Entourage”) also star in Vindicta.

The cast also includes Travis Nelson (“The Recruit”), Daniel Cudmore (“Twighlight”), Jamie Callica (“Ruthless”), Bradley Stryker (“Crawlspace”) and Karo Cubitt.


Monsters of California

Blink 182 musician Tom DeLonge channels his passion for UFOs and extraterrestrial activity into a feature film, with Monsters of California now available on VOD.

Monsters of California is described as a sci-fi adventure film in the classic style of Amblin.

In the film, directed by DeLonge, “After discovering research left behind by a missing government agent, Dallas Edwards and his misfit high school friends embark on a righteous and dangerous adventure to uncover a paranormal conspiracy in Southern California that brings them face-to-face with some of the government’s most guarded mysteries.”

Jack Samson (Zodiac), Camille Kostek (Free Guy), Casper Van Dien (Salvage Marines), Richard Kind (The Watcher) and Arianne Zucker (Days of Our Lives) star.

DeLonge wrote the script with Ian Miller and will perform original music for the film.


Cat Person review

In the wake of the film’s Sundance premiere earlier this year, Rialto Pictures brings the based-on-a-viral-story dating thriller Cat Person to select theaters this weekend.

Susanna Fogel (The Spy Who Dumped Me) directed Cat Person, based on a story penned by Kristen Roupenian for The New Yorker that became a viral sensation back in 2017.

In the film, “When Margot (Emilia Jones), a college sophomore goes on a date with the older Robert, she finds that IRL Robert doesn’t live up to the Robert (Nicholas Braun) she has been flirting with over texts. A razor-sharp exploration of the horrors of dating.”

Michelle Ashford wrote the screenplay.

Meagan wrote in her Sundance review“Cat Person highlights the hells of modern dating from the perspective of a young, rash woman, intending to work as a conversation starter.”


Foe Trailer

And finally, the apocalyptic thriller Foe, based on best-selling author Iain Reid’s (I’m Thinking of Ending Things) novel, has also been released into select theaters beginning today.

Saoirse RonanPaul Mescal, and Aaron Pierre star in this marital thriller.

The film is described as “a haunting exploration of marriage and identity set in an uncertain world.” In Foe, “Hen and Junior farm a secluded piece of land that has been in Junior’s family for generations. But their quiet life is thrown into turmoil when an uninvited stranger (Pierre) shows up at their door with a startling proposal.”

Directed by Garth Davis, Foe is co-written by Davis and Iain Reid.

‘Round the Decay’ – Creature Feature Comedy Stars Damian Maffei and Melody Kay

Fresh new label Dreamscape Productions has announced the upcoming creature feature comedy Round the Decay, with Deadline bringing us the first casting news this afternoon.

Melody Kay (The NeverEnding Story III) will star alongside Victoria Mirrer (Everwinter Night), Phil Duran (“Breaking Bad”), Damian Maffei (HauntThe Strangers: Prey at Night), Sarah Nicklin (The Black MassGarden of Eden), and Rodger Clarke (Red Dead Redemption II).

Round the Decay follows “Kenzie (Victoria Mirrer) as she gets entangled in a sinister plot in the sleepy town of Newport Valley to get closure on her broken engagement.”

Here’s the full official plot synopsis…

“When prominent locals take in a lost hiker, Kenzie, newcomer Roz and mysterious outsider Munroe find themselves caught between the leaders of the town’s factions and entangled in an ancient sinister plot dating back to its founder that threatens the survival of the town and their lives.”

Adam Newman wrote the script and is also directing the horror film.

Round the Decay is produced by Newman, Hansson, Jay Voishnis, Jon Balanoff, and Adam McDonald; and executive produced by Sean Ward, CEO of Dreamscape.
