Netflix Celebrating 1974 Cinema With 50th Anniversary Collection Including Horror Movie ‘It’s Alive’
Netflix may be the top streaming service on the planet but they’ve never been great at putting classic movies into the feeds of their subscribers. A quick glance at the streaming service at any given time will mostly assault your eyeballs with new originals and recent hits, with older movies from the 70s, 60s, 50s and earlier being almost completely absent from the service.
That’s why it’s great to hear that Netflix is currently celebrating the cinema of 1974, and it’s the first phase of their Milestone Movies: The Anniversary Collection initiative.
Netflix explains the project, “Starting this month on Netflix in the US, you can watch a robust roster of movies released in 1974 and turning the big 5-0 this year.”
Additionally, “More offerings from 1984 (turning 40), 1994 (turning 30), and 2004 (yes, this is already somehow 20 years ago!) will follow in April, July, and October, respectively.”
Netflix’s 1974 Collection is now streaming, and it includes Larry Cohen’s killer baby horror movie, It’s Alive. The film is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and it’s now streaming alongside other 1974 classics including Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Blazing Saddles, Chinatown, Death Wish, The Parallax View, The Street Fighter, and more.

Meagan Navarro wrote here on BD back in 2019, “It’s Alive ranks among the more recognizable titles from Larry Cohen. And it’s pure Cohen, a unique blend of schlock horror meets relevant commentary. In this case, it’s a reflection on how a baby’s environment has a direct effect on its outcome. But it’s also a fun creature feature with effects by Rick Baker.”
Netflix notes today, “In addition to the cinematic celebrations in your Netflix queue, there will also be in-person special screenings at the Paris Theater in New York, and at Los Angeles’ Egyptian and Bay theaters throughout the year.” Browse the full collection on Netflix.
Sony returns to their own Marvel universe with the upcoming Kraven the Hunter, which has been bumped all over the release schedule. This week, it’s been bumped once more.
There was a time when Sony was going to unleash Kraven in theaters in October 2023, but the film was then bumped to August 2024. It’ll now release on December 13, 2024.
Kraven the Hunter will be the very first Marvel movie from Sony to be released into theaters with an “R” rating, with lots of bloody violence being promised.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the title character, Marvel’s ultimate predator.
“Kraven the Hunter is the visceral story about how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Set before his notorious vendetta with Spider-Man, Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the titular character in the R-rated film.”
Ariana DeBose will play Calypso in the upcoming Kraven the Hunter movie.
Christopher Abbott (Possessor) is playing The Foreigner, with Levi Miller (Better Watch Out) also on board. Alessandro Nivola (The Many Saints of Newark) will play another villain, but character details are under wraps. Russell Crowe and Fred Hechinger also star.
J.C. Chandor (A Most Violent Year) is directing Kraven the Hunter.
The screenplay was written by Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Richard Wenk.
