The director of original classic The Crow, Alex Proyas (Dark City) has made no secret of the fact that he’s not a fan of what he’s seen from the remake so far. Proyas has made it clear over the years that he’s never been in favor of the original movie being remade – he wrote a heartfelt post on Facebook back in 2017 explaining why he feels a remake is disrespectful to the late Brandon Lee’s memory and legacy – and he’s very much sticking to that opinion.
Taking to Facebook this morning, Proyas elaborated a bit further on some of his recent posts slamming the new take on The Crow, calling back to his aforementioned comments from 2017.
Proyas writes, “I really don’t get any joy from seeing negativity about any fellow filmmakers work. And I’m certain the cast and crew really had all good intentions, as we all do on any film. So it pains me to say any more on this topic, but I think the fan’s response speaks volumes. The Crow is not just a movie. Brandon Lee died making it, and it was finished as a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss. It is his legacy. That’s how it should remain.”
The comments were made in response to an article on last week’s trailer for The Crow remake, which discussed the “staggering amount of dislikes” it has received on YouTube.
Specifically reacting to the trailer for The Crow remake starring Bill Skarsgård, Alex Proyas referred to the film as “Crow Wick,” noting the similarities to the John Wick movies.

The Crow reboot will release in theaters on June 7.
Bill Skarsgård said in a new statement, “I was a huge fan of the original film growing up as a kid and was so honored to take on the role of Eric Draven. But really what drew me to it was what Rupert Sanders wanted to do with it. He wanted to completely reimagine the story and the character and tailor it towards a modern audience. It’s a character that I know many revere and have a strong connection to – he is unlike any I’ve ever taken on before. Working with the remarkably talented FKA Twigs was magical. I felt a responsibility to Eric’s story and endeavored to stay true to the spirit of the source material; I can’t wait for the world to see the film, and hope it resonates with audiences as strongly as it did with those of us involved.”
From director Rupert Sanders, Skarsgård leads the cast of The Crow as Eric Draven, with FKA Twigs co-starring. Danny Huston (30 Days of Night) also stars, alongside Laura Birn (Foundation), Sami Bouajila (A Son), and Jordan Bolger (The Woman King).
In the new movie, “Soulmates Eric Draven (Skarsgård) and Shelly Webster (FKA Twigs) are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.”
In the 1994 movie starring the late Brandon Lee, Eric Draven’s fiancée is killed alongside Draven, setting the film’s revenge storyline into motion. It spawned a handful of sequels.
