‘Graveyard Smash’ – ‘Wolf Creek’ Director Greg McLean to Helm Action-Horror Movie About a Virtual Reality Game
Australian filmmaker Greg McLean (Wolf Creek, Rogue, The Belko Experiment) has lined up his next feature in Graveyard Smash, an action-horror movie centered around a lethal virtual reality game.
Deadline reports that the new feature is gearing up for production this year.
In Graveyard Smash, “Desperate to find her missing sister, a young woman and her three best friends find themselves trapped inside a virtual-reality game where every level forces its players to survive a different genre of a horror movie. When they learn that dying in the game means dying in real life, the friends are forced to hack, slash and battle their way to the toxic mastermind behind it all.”
Greg McLean will helm from a script by Gus Krieger (Would You Rather).
“As a lifelong horror fan, Graveyard Smash is our love letter to the genre that’s given us so much joy, fun and pure terror,” McLean told Deadline. “As a director, I’m so excited to be working with Gus on bringing this story to life, one that allows audiences to playfully and scarily experience a narrative that combines gaming, technology, nostalgia and horror fans deep connection as a community. Matthew Shreder of Concourse Media will produce alongside Tyler Condon.

Here’s the official plot synopsis from A24 this week: “In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past.”
Last we saw Maxine in Ti West’s X (2022), she was the sole survivor of a massacre carried out by elderly couple Howard and Pearl in the Summer of ’79. Goth of course pulled double duty as the villain Pearl in that movie, who got her own origin story in Pearl (2022). Pearl and Maxine are different characters, but they share the common goal of wanting to be stars.
Will Maxine finally make it in Hollywood? Or will the demons of her past become her ultimate downfall? With the Night Stalker roaming free, we expect MaXXXine to get wild this summer.
