‘Alien: Romulus’ Just Became the Highest Grossing Horror Movie of the Year

Published

on

Now in its third full week of release, Alien: Romulus continues hanging around the top spot on the box office charts, second only to Deadpool & Wolverine this past weekend. In the wake of a $42 million opening weekend, the Alien franchise’s return to the big screen has now scared up $90.6 million here in the United States, with the worldwide total passing $200 million.

Alien: Romulus is currently on the road to $300 million, in fact, with the Fede Alvarez-directed horror sequel’s worldwide total currently sitting at an impressive $285,312,631.

That makes Alien: Romulus the highest grossing horror movie of the year so far, officially passing the $261.5 million worldwide total of franchise prequel A Quiet Place: Day One.

Behind those two movies on the worldwide charts this year you’ll find Longlegs with $102.6 million, and those are the only three horror movies in 2024 to hit that $100 million milestone.

The production budget for Alien: Romulus was a reported $80 million, relatively low for a franchise movie of this size and scale, so it should have no problem turning a profit.

The highest grossing movie in the franchise to date remains Ridley Scott’s prequel Prometheus with $403.3 million in 2012, while follow-up movie Alien: Covenant ended its run with $240.8 million in 2017. Alien: Romulus is now the franchise’s second highest grossing film.

No word yet on an at-home release date for Alien: Romulus. Stay tuned.

In Alien: Romulus, “While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”

Jennifer Holland (“Peacemaker”) and Dave Annable (“Lioness”) will lead the cast of upcoming supernatural Civil War thriller Brine, Deadline reports this afternoon.

B.J. Golnick (“Hunting Hitler”) will be directing Brine.

Brine follows a family of Confederate deserters who escape the Union bombardment of Fort Pulaski with a cache of stolen gold and disappear into the Georgia marshlands.

When they take refuge in a remote plantation house, what first appears to be salvation slowly reveals itself as part of something ancient, predatory and impossible to escape.

Jonah Wharton (Lioness), Sissy Sheridan (Chicken Girls), and Grayson Lay (Outer Banks) also star. The screenplay was written by B.J. Golnick and Jeremy Miller.

Brine is a story about survival, but it is also a story about inheritance…The violence we pass down, the myths we create to justify it, and the cost of trying to break free,” Golnick previews.

“We intend for the film to feel intimate, historically grounded and deeply unnerving, as if the supernatural elements weren’t invented, but unearthed from the marsh itself.”
