Hot Spring Shark Attack

With Jaws turning 50 this year, there’s blood in the water for shark horror. That includes Hot Spring Shark Attack; the Japanese feature has been acquired for North American release by Utopia (Shiva Baby, Holy Spider), per Deadline.

Because sharks are synonymous with summer horror fum, Utopia is planning a summer 2025 rollout. Though release dates have yet to be announced.

Hot Spring Shark Attack (aka Onsen Shâku) takes place in “a small hot spring town in Japan, a ferocious ancient shark reawakens and begins terrorizing the local hot spring facilities. As the threat escalates, the townspeople band together to protect their beloved town from the menacing predator, leading to a fierce and thrilling battle.”

The horror comedy marks the feature directorial debut of writer/director Morihito Inoue. The cast includes Takuya Fujimura (One Cut of the Dead), Daniel Aguilar (Shin Godzilla), Shôichirô Akaboshi, Masaki Naito, Koichi Makigami, Kiyobumi Kaneko, and Mio Takaki.

In Japan, the shark movie appropriately premiered at the 2024 Tokyo International Shark Film Festival and took home the fest’s Audience Award. While Hot Spring Shark Attack released in Japan and other international territories last year, it had yet to make its way to shore here.

The shark movie will make its U.S. premiere this June at the Chattanooga Film Festival as the opening night film. The fest and Utopia are sponsoring a beach-themed opening night party, featuring the surf rock sounds of special guests Big Kahuna.

Get ready for a shark infested summer, and stay tuned for additional release news on this horror comedy.

After a massively successful box office run that scared up $364 million (and counting) at the worldwide box office, Kane Parsons’ Backrooms is now available on Digital at home.

You can either digitally rent or digitally purchase the A24 horror film on outlets including Amazon Prime, and it’ll cost you $19.99 for the rental and $24.99 for the purchase.

As for the extended 16-minutes of footage that were included with the recent theatrical event Backrooms: Everything Must Go Edition, Parsons promises it’s coming online.

The extra footage is expected to hit the Kane Pixels YouTube channel this week.

The sixteen minutes of “Everything Must Go” footage essentially plays out like a new episode of Kane Parsons’ Backrooms YouTube series. You can read all about it right here.

No word yet on a physical release for Backrooms. Stay tuned.

Chiwetel Ejiofor stars in Backrooms as the owner of Cap’n Clark’s Ottoman Empire, who discovers a strange doorway in the basement of the furniture showroom. He sets out to explore the mysterious, liminal space, walking headfirst into a creepypasta nightmare.

Renate Reinsve (A Different Man) also stars in Backrooms.

Meagan wrote in her review, “Backrooms is at once complex and sparse, but never repetitive. It might be set in 1990, but it effectively captures modern anxieties and isolation in a way that frequently makes your skin crawl. While the journey ultimately loses steam by its cryptic end, Parsons’ visual representation of the human psyche disturbs like no other.”

YouTube prodigy Kane Parsons makes his feature directorial debut based on his creepypasta-inspired video series, which debuted in 2022 and has amassed over 190 million views to date.
