Jon Watts Wants to Make a ‘Clown’ Sequel: “I’d Love for It to Be Like ‘Evil Dead 2′”

Jon Watts is best known for directing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man films, but he made his feature debut in the horror genre with Clown.

With Germany’s Turbine Medien releasing the 2014 film on 4K Ultra HD this week, Watts has opened up about his desire to turn Clown into a franchise.

“I still see a lot of potential in the premise, so when I watch it now, I’m like, ‘Oh, we could have done so much more there.’ I’d love for it to be like Evil Dead 2. I’d love to tell the same story, but jump off to even crazier places,” he told Variety.

Watts says that he and Clown co-writer Christopher Ford have a sequel mapped out.

“We’d want to do seven of them, make it a real long-term franchise like the Leprechaun or something like that. There are a lot of facets to the story that we’re still interested in telling, because it’s great. It’s kind of an evergreen premise where anyone can put on the suit.”

In Clown, a father dresses up in an old clown suit in an attempt to save his son’s birthday party, only to discover that it’s cursed — and there’s no way to remove it.

The project began as a faux trailer, embedded below. When Eli Roth got wind of it, he boarded the feature as a producer and secured financing. Despite a botched theatrical release from Dimension Films, Clown has garnered a cult following.

Watts recently made his return to horror with Final Destination Bloodlines, for which he conceived the story and served as a producer.

How to Watch ‘Cam’ Free Online After the Tech Thriller Left Netflix

Published

Cam streaming

Before updating the video nasty Faces of Death, director Daniel Goldhaber and writer Isa Mazzei explored the dangers of online life in tech-thriller Cam, their feature debut that was acquired by Netflix in 2018 after making waves on the festival circuit.

At the end of last year, the Netflix exclusive quietly departed from the streaming platform, left without another streaming home.

It’s not an isolated story; Mike Flanagan’s Hush also left streaming entirely for a period until it was finally picked up on both physical media and other streaming services.

While the tech-thriller currently isn’t available to watch on Netflix, Tubi, Hulu, or any other platforms, that’s not a problem for Cam thanks to a very cool move by Goldhaber: the director has made his breakout film accessible to watch online for free via his website.

As his site notes:CAM is unfortunately not currently available to view on any platforms, so you can watch it here if you like :).

No subscriptions or fees necessary, just hit play.

Cam follows Alice (Madeline Brewer), who works as an online cam girl obsessed with her ranking on the cam site. The higher her ranking goes, the more it draws unwanted attention, and Alice soon finds herself replaced on her own show with a doppelganger.

Written by Mazzei, a former camgirl, it uses the horror thriller premise to examine the life of a sex worker; Alice’s career ambition is directly at odds with the shame it brings to her family, and how she tries to spare them from it by keeping them in the dark. It only compounds her danger when the doppelganger enters the equation in Goldhaber’s engaging thriller.

For a deep dive into the treacherous world of Cam, listen to Horror Queers’ episode on it now.
