Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz have officially signed on to reprise their iconic roles as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell in the as-yet-untitled fourth installment in The Mummy franchise.
With the deals closed after months of negotiations, Universal has set a release date for the action-adventure horror-comedy: May 19, 2028.
Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett (Ready or Not, Scream 2022) will direct from a script by David Coggeshall (Orphan: First Kill).
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but sources suggest the project is not a reboot, but rather a sequel that disregards the events of the third movie (for which Weisz was recast with Maria Bello).
“Having stepped into Scream, our radar for jumping into another franchise is that it has to feel special,” Gillett previously said. “And [Coggeshall’s] script really does that. It is very beautiful and sweeping and scary and fun.”
Sean Daniel, who produced the original movies with his late partner James Jacks, is back as producer. William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein will produce through Project X Entertainment.
Fraser, Hivemind’s Jason F. Brown, and Denis Stewart will executive produce. Executive VP of production development Jay Polidoro and director of production development Jacqueline Garell are overseeing the project for Universal.
A remake of the classic Universal monster movie, The Mummy was released in 1999 and grossed $422.5 million worldwide. It was followed by The Mummy Returns in 2001 and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008.
