After years of speculation, filmmaker Christopher Landon and star Jessica Rothe announced that a third installment in the Happy Death Day franchise was moving forward last April.
While the project is no closer to entering production than it was a year ago, Rothe remains committed to reprising her role as Tree.
“The truth is, Chris Landon — our brilliant, fearless writer-director — he has the whole third one figured out,” Rothe tells Screen Rant.
“I think, at this point, it’s just logistics,” she continues. “All I’ll say to you and to all the fans is, whether it’s next year or when I’m 65, pulling a Jamie Lee Curtis coming back for Halloween, I will be there to finish Tree’s story.”
Rothe adds, “It’s just a matter of when they get all their ducks in a row.”
Back in 2020, Landon revealed that Happy Death Day to Us is the working title for the third installment. “I think we’re all excited by it, because it’s different than the other two films,” he said at the time.
In the interim, Rothe and Landon each have several exciting genre projects in the pipeline.
Roth is fresh off the SXSW premiere of the sci-fi mystery Imposters. She also has the sci-fi horror thriller Affection due out later this year, and she’s set to star with Jane Levy in Shudder’s survival slasher River.
Meanwhile, Landon recently signed on to helm the supernatural horror film Final Boarding for Screen Gems, and he’s attached to reunite with Drop co-writers Chris Roach and Jillian Jacobs on the thriller Blink of an Eye for Netflix.
