Wes Craven’s Scream opens with one of the greatest prologues in all of horror cinema, culminating in the shocking death of Drew Barrymore‘s Casey Becker at the hands of Ghostface.
In the franchise’s tradition of resurrecting characters, Barrymore would like to see Casey return in an origin story.
The pitch was sparked by a conversation with fellow Scream franchise favorite Laurie Metcalf on today’s episode of “The Drew Barrymore Show” (via EW) about her appearance in Scream 7.
“I couldn’t figure out how I could come back, but it’s so clever the way that they did it,” Metcalf said of Nancy Loomis’ surprise cameo.
“I wonder the same thing,” Barrymore replied. “People say, ‘Will you ever come back?’ And I say, ‘I’m not sure how.’”
She added, “Casey Becker, I think you could do an origin story for anything. And I think that’s how you go in there.”
Barrymore went on to explain why she took on the role in the 1996 slasher. “I wanted a clean girl. You know those girls who look so clean?” she said. “I feel like I look like a dirty birdy. Like, you know deep down inside that I’m a sicko.”
She continued, “But then you look at those other girls, and they’re like a Purel commercial. And so I was like, ‘I want the Purel commercial.’ A good girl. A nice girl.”
