The Blair Witch Project team is reuniting for Lionsgate and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster’s upcoming reboot of the genre-defining found footage horror movie.
The Hollywood Reporter has learned that actors Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, writers-directors Eduardo Sánchez and Daniel Myrick, and producer Gregg Hale will executive produce the new imagining of the 1999 film.
Dylan Clark (Portrait of God) is set to direct from a script he’s rewriting from Chris Devlin. Plot details remain under wraps.
Deadline reports that filming is being lined up for the fall with a budget in the $10 million range.
The involvement of Leonard and Williams is particularly noteworthy, as they — along with co-star Heather Donahue — have been vocal about the lack of residuals they’ve received for their work on the original movie.
Sánchez and Myrick received executive producer credits on the previous sequels, 2000’s Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 and 2016’s Blair Witch, but were not creatively involved.
Blumhouse’s Jason Blum and Atomic Monster‘s James Wan will produce the reboot alongside Roy Lee and Divide/Conquer’s Adam Hendricks & Greg Gilreath. Executive producers include Steven Schneider, Michael Clear, and Judson Scott.
Lionsgate and Blumhouse will launch international sales at the Cannes film market next month. Lionsgate is expected to distribute in North America and the UK.
The original Blair Witch Project followed three film students who vanish in the Maryland woods while shooting a documentary on a local legend, leaving only their footage behind. Produced for around $60,000, it earned $248.6 million globally.
