Living up to the ’80s slashers to which it pays homage, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma has been rated R by the MPA for “bloody violence, gore, sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use, and some language.”
Written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun‘s (I Saw the TV Glow), the sapphic meta horror film hits theaters August 7 via Mubi.
“With this film, I remember being like, ‘It is very important in the very first scene of the movie that there’d be a huge fucking geyser of blood,'” Schoenbrun tells Deadline.
In the movie, after years of slapdash sequels and waning fandom, the Camp Miasma slasher franchise is handed over to an enthusiastic young director for resurrection. But when she visits the original movie’s star, a now-reclusive actress shrouded in mystery, the two women fall into a blood-soaked world of desire, fear, and delirium.
Hannah Einbinder (“Hacks”) and Gillian Anderson (“The X-Files”) star with Jack Haven (I Saw the TV Glow) as Little Death.
“I did think about Gillian while writing the script. I was thinking about childhood sex symbols, and for so many of my friends, their coming of age was about Dana Scully,” Schoenbrun comments. “Growing up, I was a huge ‘X-Files’ obsessive from third grade on. It was my life.”
Amanda Fix (Lowlifes), Arthur Conti (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice), Eva Victor (Sorry Baby), Zach Cherry (“Severance”), Sarah Sherman (“Saturday Night Live”), Patrick Fischler (“Twin Peaks”), Dylan Baker (Trick ‘r Treat), Jasmin Savoy Brown (Scream), Kevin McDonald (“The Kids in the Hall”), and Quintessa Swindell (Black Adam) round out the cast.
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is produced by Mubi and Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment.
