“The past 65 years have proven that no matter how many remakes, reboots, and reimaginings come along, Horror of Dracula continually stands as one of the best versions of this unkillable myth,” Brian Keiper wrote here on Bloody Disgusting back in 2023, asserting that the Hammer horror classic starring Christopher Lee redefined the vampire for a whole new generation.
All these years later, and long after the passing of stars Lee and Peter Cushing, Hammer’s Horror of Dracula is showing new signs of life with a brand new 4K restoration on the way.
But this isn’t just any ordinary 4K restoration. Deadline details in a piece this week that the Horror of Dracula restoration will feature previously cut scenes that you’ve never seen before!
John Gore Studios, which now owns Hammer, explains that “footage cut by censors and distributors at the time of its original release was discovered in a Warner Bros. warehouse.”
“Only those who saw the film on its release in Japan would have seen the uncut version,” Deadline notes.
This fully restored version of 1958’s Horror of Dracula will reportedly be getting a theatrical release this Halloween season, while an at-home release is also being planned.
John Gore explains, “We managed to get the uncut original Christopher Lee Dracula. So we’ve just been remastering that now. So there’s like three minutes missing. Hammer’s business was based on the censor. Getting that X-rated certificate was crucial to marketing, but they could only go so far because the censors didn’t like what they saw — all that blood.”
“Warner Brothers, they have this massive, massive storage near LAX where everything from the 1920s onwards is there,” Gore continues. “And they found the director’s cut of the original 1958 Dracula. So we will be unlocking that and the world will get to see the bits they weren’t seeing, which is mostly to do with how Dracula dies at the end.”
Gore goes on to explain, “… they had to trim a bit of the sexual stuff and then how he’s destroyed at the end. They cut quite a lot out because they went, ‘It’s too gruesome.’ And now that’s back in. All the crucial points that were axed are now back in.”
Hammer previews, “Painstakingly restored in 4K from the best original archival materials sourced from around the world, Dracula returns in its most complete form ever presented. For the first time outside of Japan’s 1958 theatrical release, footage believed lost for over six decades has been meticulously restored and reintegrated into the film. This footage has never been released in the UK or US, and has never been seen on home entertainment anywhere.”
