Following in the footsteps of The Wizard of Oz, the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show is getting its own immersive experience at Sphere Las Vegas in 2027, Variety reports.
The outlet details, “Sphere Studios will use its signature immersive technology to enhance the 1975 film, a cult classic famous for its rowdy midnight showings and audience participation.”
The cult sensation originally released in 1975 and has become the longest-running theatrical release of all time, with the film celebrating its landmark 50th anniversary last year.
The cult musical was created/written by Richard O’Brien and directed by Jim Sharman.
“Through Sphere Studios, we are building a slate of original experiences that push the boundaries of technology and storytelling for this new medium, while always keeping the audience at the center of the experience,” said Jim Dolan, Sphere Entertainment’s executive chairman and CEO. “Since The Rocky Horror Picture Show premiered in 1975, it redefined audience participation and became a cultural phenomenon. With Sphere, we have the opportunity to take that spirit of immersion to an entirely new level.”
The Wizard of Oz at Sphere Las Vegas has been a massive success, generating over $400 million in ticket sales. The release also generated a lot of controversy, with Sphere Studios editing the movie and using AI to essentially create a whole new version of the classic film.
In Rocky Horror, “Fasten your garter belt and relive the time-warping, gender-bending cult classic! When a newly engaged couple’s (Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon) car breaks down on a rainy night, they wind up in the creepy castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry). There, they have an adventure that will thrill you, chill you, and fulfill you like never before!”
Definitive Rocky Horror documentary Strange Journey was just released this month.
