After spending August discussing Jane Schoenbrun’s contemporary queer classic I Saw The TV Glow (listen), and Kurtis David Harder’s better – and gayer – sequel Influencers (listen), it came time to select a text to celebrate our 400th Main Feed episode.
We couldn’t think of a better title than one of the queerest films of all time: Richard O’Brien and Jim Sharman‘s cult classic, midnight musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975).
In this campy, vampy ode to science fiction films of the past, Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon) find themselves stranded at a strange Frankenstein castle during a storm. There they meet a strange band of residents, including handyman Riff Raff (O’Brien), maid Magenta (Patricia Quinn) and the mad doctor himself, Frank-N-Furter (the incomparable Tim Curry).
After being shown the lab, the group finds a specimen of a man on the slab: Rocky (Peter Hinwood), who throws the castle into chaos. Add in biker Eddie (Meatloaf), his lover/groupie Columbia (Little Nell) and a myriad of “Transylvanian” conventionalists and there’s plenty of music, madness, and mania to go around!
