The King of the Monsters is headed to New York City, with the New York Film Festival announcing this morning that they’ll be hosting the World Premiere of Godzilla Minus Zero.
The New York Film Festival says, “We’re thrilled to announce the world premiere of Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus Zero as the #NYFF64 Spotlight Gala selection, taking place September 26 with Takashi Yamazaki and members of the cast and crew in attendance.”
The festival previews, “After Godzilla Minus One’s triumphant reimagination of the timeless Godzilla franchise in 2023, with its ingenious, Oscar-winning visual effects and emotionally gripping back-to-basics storytelling approach, director Takashi Yamazaki returns with a supremely satisfying sequel. Godzilla Minus Zero picks up in 1949, two years after the tumultuous events of Godzilla Minus One, and continues the story of the Shikishima family as they face an all-new calamity. An experience that demands the big screen, featuring even more astounding effects choreography than its predecessor, Godzilla Minus Zero cranks up the terror while always keeping its post-WWII Japan narrative at human eye level.”

Presented by Film at Lincoln Center in partnership with Rolex, this year’s 64th New York Film Festival will take place from September 25, 2026 through October 12, 2026.
The first Japanese movie to be filmed for IMAX, Godzilla Minus Zero will receive a wide theatrical release in North America on November 6, 2026 via GKIDS.
Godzilla Minus One stars Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe will both be reprising their roles in Godzilla Minus Zero, with Takashi Yamazaki back in the director’s chair.
The film is set in 1949 — two years after the events of its predecessor.
Here’s the new official synopsis: “War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life. Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant.
“There is no third time. Everything ends here.”
