Kate Beckinsale cemented her legacy in the world of horror thanks to starring as the werewolf-hunting vampire Selene in five Underworld movies, while also dropping by horror projects like Van Helsing, Vacancy, and Whiteout. More recently, she’s starred in adrenaline-fueled action thrillers, with her latest movie uniting her with I Know What You Did Last Summer star Ryan Phillippe in the psychological thriller The Patient.
As confirmed by Variety, Buffalo 8 Distribution has acquired The Patient for VOD distribution in December, which will be followed by a physical media release. In honor of the acquisition, a first look at the new film has been released, which you can see above.
The outlet describes, “Phillippe plays a man who comes to in a medical facility following a collision, left unable to move properly and with no recollection of the crash. Staff tell him his name is Dean Morris, but he refuses the identification, claiming to be Andrew Wright, a nature photographer.
“As his course of treatment darkens and the circumstances surrounding his identity grow increasingly difficult to square, he must find someone to trust before any evidence of who he truly is gets wiped out. Beckinsale plays Dr. Rose, the film’s inscrutable attending physician.”
The Patient was written and directed by Mukunda Michael Dewil, who previously directed The Immaculate Room and Collide, as well as Prey, which starred Phillippe. Additionally, David Cade, Kelly Greyson, and Michael Sirow star in the film.
Nikki Stier Justice, head of distribution at Buffalo 8, shared in a statement about the acquisition, “The Patient immediately drew us in with its sharp premise and the way Mukunda sustains tension while constantly shifting what the audience believes. Ryan Phillippe and Kate Beckinsale bring tremendous intensity to the film, and we’re thrilled to partner with this accomplished team to bring it to audiences this December.”
While both Beckinsale and Phillippe have maintained their tenures in thrilling projects, seeing them unite for a more outright unsettling experience will be a welcome return for those more familiar with their horror outings. This isn’t the only horror effort on Beckinsale’s calendar, as it was confirmed earlier this year that she would be replacing Milla Jovovich in Twilight of the Dead, which is expected to be the final chapter in George A. Romero’s iconic zombie series that kicked off with Night of the Living Dead.
