A growing concern among the entire world is overpopulation, not only in cultural hotbeds and communities, but also for the entire planet. Just how long can the world sustain the population that seems to be losing resources and increasing its population at an exponential rate? Well, in the new French movie Sunnyside, one option is to grow humans to serve as a food source.
Per Deadline, production on the new movie officially kicked off this week, which marks the debut feature from Yoann Luis.
“Sunnyside is part of the tradition of socially conscious genre cinema, where we examine power dynamics in society as humans become a resource,” Luis shared in a statement about the film. “The legalization of cannibalism becomes a provocative metaphor for our relationships of domination, the commodification of bodies, and social and territorial divides.”
The movie will star Lucille Guillaume (seen above in the film MadS) and Rod Paradot. Behind the scenes, there’s a significant pedigree of genre talent at all levels.
The Coven will handle sales, having previously handled sales for Terrifier 3. The Coven also recently released Terrifier: The ArtCade Game, their first video game for the beloved slasher franchise. Xavier Gens will serve as an associate producer, having previously directed the shark-horror Under Paris and the series Lupin.
ESC Films will distribute Sunnyside theatrically in France, having previously distributed Red Rooms, When Evil Lurks, Terrifier 2 & 3, The Ugly Stepsister, and The Sadness.
Executive Producer Priscilla Ross Smith shared of the project, “The Coven is originally a French company, and we have been looking for the perfect opportunity to invest and partner here … Sunnyside is the perfect mix of artistic and commercial themes, and the connection with the team was immediate for us.”
Interestingly, France brought us one of the best cannibal movies of the last decade, courtesy of Julia Ducournau’s Raw. That film focused on two sisters entering veterinary school, only to be overwhelmed by newfound cravings for flesh. Ducournau would follow Raw with Titane, which earned her the Palme d’Or, the Cannes Film Festival’s top prize.
There is currently no release date for Sunnyside.
