We always appreciate when a horror movie can take complex themes and find new ways to shed insight into the human experience, but we don’t always need complex ideas, and sometimes we are just as happy watching what happens when someone is trapped with a deadly animal. That’s exactly the case of Alexandre Aja‘s Crawl, which somewhat unceremoniously debuted back in 2019 and slowly but surely cemented itself as a thrilling creature feature in the years since its debut.
Aja returns to direct a Crawl sequel, which Deadline has confirmed just scored a July 16, 2027 release date. This mirrors the release date of the original movie, which hit theaters on July 12, 2019. One of that biggest topics of the summer box-office season was the release of Avengers: Endgame, with The Lion King, Toy Story 4, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Aladdin also being major hits that summer. There weren’t a lot of eyes on Crawl, but with it being produced on a reported budget of $15 million and going on to score $91 million worldwide, the movie was a surprising success. With 84% positive reviews on aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, it’s also a rare creature feature that earned the support of critics.
Aja helms the sequel, which stars Mason Gooding and Emily Rudd. The original movie starred Kaya Scodelario, as her character returned to her family home during a major hurricane to check in on her father, played by Barry Pepper. The rising waters of the hurricane unexpectedly flooded their basement, which brought along with it some deadly gators. The pair was forced to find an escape and to evade the gators, all while the waters continued to rise.
Plot details about the Crawl sequel are largely under wraps, though we do know it will be a similar scenario, with the setting having been moved to New York City. Craig Flores, Sam Raimi, and Aja are producing. Levasseur and Zainab Azizi will executive produce.
With significant members of the creative team returning and the concept being a proven success, we won’t be surprise if the sequel surpasses the accomplishments of the original.
