The last time there was an attempt to reboot Resident Evil, we got 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. The movie wasn’t entirely without merit, but it ultimately failed to capture what makes the games so special, even if it was a welcome tonal shift from the Milla Jovovich-starring Paul W.S. Anderson series. We’ve been excited for Zach Cregger‘s movie, given the horror skills he put on display in Barbarian and Weapons, though with this being his first foray into a major franchise, there was still reason to be apprehensive.
Reviews for the movie started rolling in earlier this week and not only did these reactions lean heavily positive, but they are so positive that they set an all-time record for video game adaptations, with Rotten Tomatoes calculating a 96% positive rating. A key component of the movie’s success is its score from Hays Hollady and Ryan Hollady, with the score now available to stream.
Per press release, “Milan Records today releases Resident Evil (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) by composers Hays Holladay and Ryan Holladay. Available everywhere now, the pulse-pounding score was written by the Holladay brothers for filmmaker Zach Cregger’s highly anticipated reimagining of the iconic horror franchise. Built on a foundation of heavy synths, pounding brass, dark atmospheric textures and haunting vocal elements, the music heightens the film’s suspense and scale, accompanying its relentless descent into horror and chaos. The pair shared in a statement, “We collaborated closely with Zach from the earliest days of the edit through the final mix, shaping a score that’s menacing and driving, a constant push and pull between tension and release, containment and chaos. Built on heavy bass synths and bombastic brass, and threaded with vocals and dark pads, the score mirrors Bryan’s journey deeper into an increasingly hellish, mayhem-filled world.”
