Actor Maika Monroe had a great 2014, as she had two major festival hits making the rounds. One movie was The Guest, from director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett, where she starred as a girl whose family became the unexpected target of soldier-turned-experiment David (Dan Stevens) in an action-thriller. Also playing the festival circuit was It Follows, where she played Jay, whose romantic tryst resulted in her getting stalked by a demonic, shape-shifting entity. The Guest earned a spiritual sequel this year with Onslaught, also from Wingard and Barrett and starring Stevens, while It Follows is getting a more direct follow-up with They Follow.
The original movie is one of many indie movies who had a relatively mundane theatrical release, only to grow a huge following on streaming. David Robert Mitchell‘s movie might not have demanded another entry, though its exploration of an unstoppable force that could only be deterred when a target had sex with someone sparked all sorts of theories among audiences. After being teased for years, They Follow finally entered production earlier this year and, courtesy of production company Curious Gremlin, we know that filming on the sequel has wrapped.
On Instagram, Curious Gremlin shared a post revealing the conclusion of principal photography. Unfortunately, no details or images of the production were shared, though this will only spark more speculation.
Part of what makes They Follow so exciting is how many original components of It Follows are returning. Monroe reprises her role and Mitchell once again directs, but one of the most iconic elements of the movie will also be featured in the sequel, as Disasterpiece is confirmed to be crafting the sequel’s score. Also starring in the new movie are Jackie Earle Haley (Little Children, A Nightmare on Elm Street), Justine Lupe (Succession), Anna Mirodin (Ivan), Jayne Taini (Unbelievable), Michael Gandolfini (Daredevil: Born Again), Tom Pecinka (Stereophonic), Melora Walters (Magnolia), Ben Krieger (Song Sung Blue), Natalie Shinnick (The Brutalist), and Jan Hoag (The Fabelmans) have joined the cast this week.
Naomi Ackie (Blink Twice) has also been confirmed to join They Follow.
This summer saw the release of Mitchell’s big-budget dinosaur spectacle The End of Oak Street, with the cast for They Follow, along with the pluralized title, teasing that the scale of the project will be much larger than what we got in the original movie.
They Follow doesn’t yet have a release date.
