Ari Aster‘s debut feature film, Hereditary, immediately put him on the map with horror fans. The movie was lauded as one of the most frightening theatrical experiences of 2018, and for good reason. He somehow managed to make an equally effective follow-up with Midsommar, helping launch Florence Pugh‘s career and putting a fresh spin on folk horror. Aster’s next two movies, Beau Is Afraid and Eddington, both leaned more into darkly comedic elements, while also finding ways to insert anxiety-inducing sequences. His next movie, though, might be a more overt return to genre storytelling and it’s just enlisted some genre favorites.
As confirmed by Deadline, Fallout star Ella Purnell, Get Out star Caleb Landry Jones, and Pluribus star Samba Schutte have joined Aster’s Scapegoat. The trio join the previously announced Scarlett Johansson, Jacob Elordi, and Jude Law. Details on the narrative itself are quite sparse, leading to endless amounts of speculation. Some reports claim it’s a sci-fi movie, while others claim it’s about a doctor who has to operate on a celebrity, though even other reports claims it will be a straightforward drama.
Scapegoat marks only the latest of many genre efforts from Purnell, whose breakout role came in Showtime’s Yellowjackets. With her character dying in the first season, she had more time in her schedule to pick up other projects, including the post-apocalyptic Fallout and the serial killer series Sweetpea.
Landry Jones has an ever-growing list of genre credits to his name. 2010’s The Last Exorcism was his first major effort in the horror world, though he followed that with appearances in Antiviral, The Dead Don’t Die, and Dogman. He also took on the iconic role of Dracula in last year’s adaptation from Luc Besson.
Samba Schutte might not have quite as many genre credits to his name as the aforementioned stars, but given that he managed to steal multiple scenes in Vince Gilligan‘s Pluribus, one of the best-reviewed series of 2025, he has become a highly sought-after star. In addition to starring in Scapegoat, we can expect him to return in Season 2 of the Apple TV series.
