Hereditary and Midsommar writer-director Ari Aster is directing Scapegoat next, and Deadline reports that Jude Law (The Third Day, The Talented Mr. Ripley) is in negotiations to co-star opposite previously announced star Scarlett Johansson.
As is always the case with Aster’s work, plot details are being kept under wraps. Even the genre is unknown at this time, other than it’s a thriller that will be distributed by A24.
Jacob Elordi (Guillermo del Toro‘s Frankenstein) also recently joined the cast.
Speculation thus far suggests Scapegoat is either about a doctor who operates on an internet-famous person, a sci-fi romance, or a drama. Time will tell, of course, but Aster tends not to take the straightforward approach with his films.
Scapegoat is slated to enter production soon, accommodating Johansson’s busy production schedule. The Oscar nominee just wrapped on Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist and is shooting The Batman: Part II this summer.
Aster established himself as a modern master of horror with the one-two punch of 2018’s Hereditary and 2019’s Midsommar. He went on to helm Beau Is Afraid in 2023, followed by Eddington, which premiered at Cannes last year.
