Eduardo Sánchez, along with Daniel Myrick, fundamentally changed the world of horror in 1999 with The Blair Witch Project. Their movie wasn’t the first found-footage experience in terror, as titles like Cannibal Holocaust and The Last Broadcast were released previously, but Blair Witch became a global phenomenon that largely introduced the world to the concept of first-person footage being found after a tragic event. Sánchez has made a number of movies since then, like Altered, Exists, and Lovely Molly, though when your debut feature has such a tremendous impact on cinema, it’s always the first point of reference for the filmmaker.
Sánchez has found his next project, as Deadline confirms that he is joining the indie sci-fi movie Giant Void. The movie comes from writer-director Michael Reisinger, with Sánchez serving as an executive producer. Also joining the project is Karl Glusman, who was recently seen in titles like Eenie Meanie and The Running Man. He joins previously announced actors Molly Burnett (Law & Order: SVU), Elaine Hendrix (The Parent Trap), and Shahjehan Khan.
Giant Void follows Chloe (Burnett), “a brilliant but isolated computer scientist whose potentially world-changing software uncovers hidden connections she was never meant to find. As she grows closer to a new co-worker (Glusman), the discovery forces her to question the nature of human connection, reality and humanity’s place in the universe.”
“I’m honored to be part of this team,” Sánchez shared in a statement. “Giant Void is an amazing and emotional journey that will surely touch audiences everywhere. Can’t wait to get this film out there.”
The narrative itself sounds compelling, though this description teases that it leans more into the hard sci-fi realm as opposed to a more fantastical world. Glusman is no stranger to such a tone, having previously starred in the highly underrated series Devs from Alex Garland. Admittedly, the events of that series ignited when Glusman’s character seemingly set himself on fire, so he wasn’t a significant component of the entire narrative, yet Giant Void does sound as though it could have a similar tone to the Hulu series.
Giant Void isn’t the only producing project on Sánchez’s horizon, as he’s set to produce the next Blair Witch Project installment. Myrick will also serve as a producer, as will original stars Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams. The next chapter will be directed by Dylan Clark.
