You’d be hard-pressed to find a list of the scariest TV shows of the last decade and not find Mike Flanagan‘s The Haunting of Hill House on it. In fact, you might even find his other shows Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher, or even The Midnight Club on there as well.
The filmmaker’s talents aren’t only relegated to long-form narratives, though, as proven in movies like Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep. Throughout his career, he’s conjured up all sorts of unsettling imagery, but as he heads into one of the most iconic horror franchises of all time with The Exorcist: Martyrs, he might have outdone himself.
Actor Samantha Sloyan, who has starred in a number of Flanagan projects and has a small role in Martyrs, recently teased that what she saw of the new movie surpasses anything Flanagan has previously offered.
“I have a small role in The Exorcist,” Sloyan shared with Deadline. “I have a very tiny footprint in that one, but I did get to go and see some stuff. All I’ve seen is what I watched through the monitor that day. But, it’s stunningly beautiful. And, for me personally, I think from what little I saw, it’s the scariest thing that I’ve seen him do. So, I’m very excited. I’m excited as everybody else is to see it.”
With Sloyan having starred in Flanagan’s Hush, Hill House, Midnight Mass, Midnight Club, House of Usher, and the new Carrie, few actors are as familiar with the filmmaker’s work as she is. For the upcoming movie to get such an endorsement teases we’re in for quite a ride with the project.
As far as whether this upcoming movie will kick off a string of entries into The Exorcist franchise or if it’s a one-off experience, Flanagan shed some insight with Bloody Disgusting.
“Oh, you know, I have no idea. I was so fixated on getting to the end credits of that movie,” Flanagan confirmed of his future with The Exorcist. “That’s another franchise that has this huge legacy and so many expectations piled on it. I wouldn’t let myself imagine past, like, the last day of production, to be honest. It was, how do I deliver an Exorcist movie right now? One movie that is going to invigorate the fan base and show us something we haven’t seen before in one of the most explored subgenres that exists?”
He added, “So, yeah, if that turns into something more, that would be amazing. I’m still just trying to see my way to the end of the edit. I can’t see past that at the moment. But yeah, I guess, never say never.”
The Exorcist: Martyrs will hit theaters on March 12, 2027. Carrie is now streaming on Prime Video.
