Mike Flanagan‘s The Exorcist film now has an official title: The Exorcist: Martyrs. The announcement brings first look images, plot details, a release date, and a teaser.
The Exorcist: Martyrs will possess theaters on March 12, 2027, via Universal.
Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers), Jacobi Jupe (Hamnet), Diane Lane (Unfaithful), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Sasha Calle (The Flash), and John Leguizamo (John Wick) star.
The cast also includes Flanagan regulars Rahul Kohli, Hamish Linklater, Gil Bellows, Carl Lumbly, Robert Longstreet, Matt Biedel, Samantha Sloyan, Kate Siegel, John Gallagher Jr., Benjamin Pajak, and Carla Gugino.
Thanks to Esquire, we now have new plot details as well, and it sounds as though Flanagan will be taking some inspiration from The Exorcist III.
Johansson’s Detective Julie Miller is a homicide detective with the NYPD and a single mother of a young boy named Max, who’s just turned 12 years old. Miller (a nod to original Father Karras actor Jason Miller, perhaps?) apprehends Leguizamo’s serial killer “Father Sunday” early in the story and is a witness to his execution. That, naturally, will only be the start of the Detective’s problems; this is an Exorcist movie after all.
Chiwetel Ejiofor and Laurence Fishburne play priests who will certainly come in handy once demonic possession comes into play.
Like the third entry in this franchise, Flanagan’s iteration will combine serial killer thrills with demonic possession horror. But the filmmaker promises he’s not retreading what’s already come before.
“I think the first job is to tell people they’re not seeing a retread of The Exorcist,” Flanagan told Esquire. “They’re not seeing any attempt to reboot or remake or to step into the Friedkin film. They’re actually seeing a story within the Exorcist universe that has not been told before, that is unique within the franchise and taking it in a very different direction than it’s gone in the past. That’s what I’m hoping. We’re doing something very, very different than what people might’ve expected.”
Expect the full trailer to arrive this Friday.
