John Carpenter Reissuing Classic Horror Themes on Vinyl: Releases “Escape From New York” Live Studio Performance

John Carpenter was always a man of dual worlds, mixing his love of cinema with his passion for music. He composed nearly every film he made, utilizing a synth style that has long since been emulated and honored by countless composers, bands, and artists.

These days, Carpenter has seemingly moved fully from directing to composing, releasing two albums, including the recent Lost Themes II (review), and now scheduling a live tour for later this year that will see him perform his music in countries around the world.

But while Carpenter may be looking towards the future, that doesn’t mean he’s forgotten his past. That’s why he’s decided to re-record four classic themes (Escape From New York, The Fog, Halloween, Assault on Precinct 13) with his band and release them as double A-side 12″ records.

These 12″ releases include the themes to Halloween b/w Escape From New York and Assault on Precinct 13 b/w The Fog, newly rerecorded by Carpenter and his Lost Themes bandmates. May it serve as a bridge between the Horror Master’s legendary, still relevant past and his remarkable present.

Each double A-sided 12′ will be available in deluxe limited edition mylar mirrorboard sleeves and as picture discs.

The Assault on Precinct 13/The Fog split can be found here while the Halloween/Escape From New York split can be pre-ordered right here.

To celebrate these upcoming releases, both of which come out June 17th, Carpenter has released a live video performance of the Escape From New York theme.
