“Shrieking, slithering, torrential shadows of red viscous madness chasing one another through endless, ensanguined corridors of purple fulgorous sky…”
We’re excited to bring you an exclusive first listen to a sample of Cadabra Records upcoming spoken word vinyl release of H.P. Lovecraft‘s “The Lurking Fear“. Read by H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society co-founder and professional voice actor Andrew Leman, Lovecraft’s 1922 story comes to breathtaking life with a haunting background score courtesy of dark ambient outfit Theologian.
S.T. Joshi, who provided liner notes, explains the origin of the story:
Especially in his earlier years, Lovecraft enjoyed experimenting with this kind of over-the-top horror, and the results are some of his most entertaining stories. “The Lurking Fear” is one of these.
Written in November 1922, it was the second of Lovecraft’s professionally published stories. Weird Tales, which was the haven for most of his later tales, would not be founded until March 1923; and Lovecraft — who was not even sure he wanted to be a “professional” writer, if that meant churning out hackwork according to market specifications — wrote The Lurking Fear in response to the pleas of a friend, George Julian Houtain, who wanted just such a blood-and-thunder narrative.
I’m not really one for audiobooks but I can easily see myself being converted if I found out that more of them were like this. The combination of eldritch storytelling with an unsettling backdrop makes for a perfect horror experience.
You can pre-order your copy of The Lurking Fear through Cadabra Records. Shipping begins on July 8th.
