Haunting “Unsolved Mysteries” Soundtrack Getting 1st Ever Vinyl Release!

Published

on

The original “Unsolved Mysteries” theme song, composed by Michael Boyd and Gary Remal Malkin, is one of the downright creepiest tunes in the history of entertainment. Most horror movie scores cannot even compare to the show’s theme, which someone managed to perfectly encapsulate all the ominous goings-on that the series explored.

Just thinking about the theme, to this day, sends chills up my spine.

Today we’ve learned that Terror Vision is releasing the original broadcast soundtrack for the show, for the very first time, on vinyl. Now up for pre-order, the Single LP and Triple LP versions of the soundtrack both include remastered audio pulled from original tapes.

The company’s owner explains, “Immediately after inking the deal with John Cosgrove (Unsolved Mysteries creator), I was sent several hundred DAT tapes of all the music for the show. So from February until a few weeks ago I would spend several hours a day making sense of everything. The single LP version features my personal favorite songs from the ghost related segments of Unsolved Mysteries whereas the triple LP set contains EVERYTHING written for the ghost segments. This version is very very limited as it’s really just meant for diehard fans.”

Single LP Version ($27):

This is the single LP version featuring 3 UM theme songs, 29 ghost related cues and the missing/wanted music. This set is curated by Ryan Graveface.

  • First time the score has been available on any format!
  • Audio pulled from original tapes / remastered
  • Gatefold packaging / full-color inner sleeve

Choose your vinyl colorway:

  • 180 Gram retail/mailorder color (“Last Light” variant for those keeping track)
  • 180 Gram Black as night
  • 180 Gram Hand-Poured wax  (Terror Vision Subscribers only – join to receive)

Triple LP Version ($48):

This is the triple LP version featuring 5 UM theme songs/closing credits, 120 (!!) ghost related cues and the missing/wanted music.

  • First time the score has been available on any format!
  • Audio pulled from original tapes / remastered
  • Triple Gatefold Stoughton packaging / 3 full-color inner sleeves
  • Liner notes from creator John Cosgrove, composer Gary Malkin & Ryan Graveface (me!)

Choose your vinyl colorway:

  • 180 Gram Black as night

Both versions are also available in special bundles, which each include an “Unsolved Mysteries” logo t-shirt and enamel pin. Head over to Terror Vision to pre-order yours!

Expect to receive your order by this coming July.

“He Walks By Night” – Listen to a Brand New John Carpenter Song NOW!

John Carpenter music

It’s a new day, and you’ve got new John Carpenter to listen to. John Carpenter, Daniel Davies and Cody Carpenter have released the new track He Walks By Night this morning, the second single off their upcoming album Lost Themes IV: Noir, out May 3 on Sacred Bones Records.

Lost Themes IV: Noir is the latest installment in a series that sees Carpenter releasing new music for John Carpenter movies that don’t actually exist. The first Lost Themes was released in 2015, followed by Lost Themes II in 2016 and Lost Themes III: Alive After Death in 2021.

Sacred Bones previews, “It’s been a decade since John Carpenter recorded the material that would become Lost Themes, his debut album of non-film music and the opening salvo in one of Hollywood’s great second acts. Those vibrant, synth-driven songs, made in collaboration with his son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies, kickstarted a musical renaissance for the pioneering composer and director. With Lost Themes IV: Noir, they’ve struck gold again, this time mining the rich history of the film noir genre for inspiration.

“Since the first Lost Themes, John has referred to these compositions as “soundtracks for the movies in your mind.” On the fourth installment in the series, those movies are noirs. Like the film genre they were influenced by, what makes these songs “noirish” is sometimes slippery and hard to define, and not merely reducible to a collection of tropes. The scores for the great American noir pictures were largely orchestral, while the Carpenters and Davies work off a sturdy synth-and-guitar backbone.

“The trio’s free-flowing chemistry means Lost Themes IV: Noir runs like a well-oiled machine—the 1951 Jaguar XK120 Roadster from Kiss Me Deadly, perhaps, or the 1958 Plymouth Fury from John’s own Christine. It’s a chemistry that’s helped power one of the most productive stretches of John’s creative life, and Noir proves that it’s nowhere near done yielding brilliant results.”
