We learned in December that the Broadway run of the Tony-nominated Beetlejuice: The Musical (read our review) was coming to an end this June, but the sad reality is that we now know the musical’s final performance at the Winter Garden Theatre is behind us. Broadway is remaining closed through June 7, one day after the final performance was scheduled.
But, as Broadway World notes today, the news isn’t all grim.
The site reports, “The musical still has plans to launch the previously announced national tour in the fall of 2021.”
Broadway World continues, “Sources tell us that producers are still considering if there is an opportunity for Beetlejuice to return to Broadway in another theater, but a decision won’t be made until there is more information including a date for Broadway to reopen.”
The final Broadway performance (for now, at least) took place on March 10th.
Directed by Alex Timbers, with a score by Eddie Perfect, book by Scott Brown & Anthony King and choreography by Connor Gallagher, the musical stars Alex Brightman as Beetlejuice and Sophia Anne Caruso as Lydia Deetz. Beetlejuice tells the story of Lydia Deetz, a strange teenager obsessed with the whole “being dead thing.” When Lydia calls on a degenerate demon to scare away her insufferable parents, Beetlejuice comes up with a plan involving exorcism, arranged marriages and an adorable girl scout who gets scared out of her wits.
