SDCC ’09: James Wan to Write and Direct ‘Castlevania’!

Published

Bloody-Disgusting can exclusively announce here that James Wan, the co-mastermind behind the Saw franchise, and director of Dead Silence and Death Sentence, will be co-writing and directing Castlevania! Inside you’ll find a tid-bit from Wan about his forthcoming adaptation. Sylvain White was originally slated to direct. Castlevania is an adaptation of the popular NES game from the 80’s that has since become a massive video game franchise.
I’m very fresh on this project, so its early stages and I’m still trying to work things out, but the producers love my vision for it,” James Wan tells Bloody-Disgusting in an exclusive chat. “I’ll be working on the script with a writer to give it a new spin, different to the previous versions. This will have my stamp on it which Konami is very excited about.

The thing I love about what Konami did with Castlevania, was taking the iconic Dracula mythology and Eastern-European setting, and retelling it with a Japanese pop-cultural sensibility,” he continues. “That’s the East-meets-West tone I want to visually expand on for the film. I’m thrilled by the opportunity to make a highly stylized, fantasy, action film that focuses on the gothic storyline and the cool, anime-like characters. For once, the human hero is as sexy and dangerous as the vampire villain, and his weapon of choice was what attracted me to the project in the first place – The Vampire Killer Whip.

Writer/Director Carlota Pereda‘s feature debut, Piggy, presents a compelling, violent depiction of bullying and revenge. And it’s out on DVD and Blu-ray now.

In celebration of the Magnolia Home Entertainment release, Bloody Disgusting can exclusively reveal Alt Poster Art that highlights how mean Piggy can get. Each one gives a closer look at the main characters, framed by blood.

In the Spanish horror film…

“During the sweltering summertime of rural Spain, Sara carries an extra load of teenage agony due to the perpetual bullying from her peers. She’s also an outsider at home—her parents and little brother just don’t understand her—so, feelings internalized, she’s often found buried in her headphones, drowning out her surroundings. One day, Sara’s usual solo dip at the local pool is disrupted by the presence of a mysterious stranger in the water and an exceptionally grueling bout of abuse at the hands of three girls. But, in a strange twist of fate, along the way home Sara witnesses her bloodied tormentors being kidnapped in the back of the stranger’s van. Sara must decide whether to cooperate with the police and parents’ questioning about the kidnappings, or take her own, unbridled path—while also discovering the power of desire and belonging, and the distinction between revenge and redemption.”

Laura Galán stars as Sara in Piggy.

Piggy is Pereda’s feature length adaptation of her 2018 short, “Cerdita.”

I previously wrote in my Sundance review, “Piggy gives viewers a lot to chew on in this intimate morality tale carried by Galán’s haunting performance. Every bit of Sara’s helplessness, fear, anguish, rage, and even attraction is tangible. Pereda casts an unflinching eye on Sara, making it feel even more personal through the aspect ratio and restraint in specific types of violence.

Look for Piggy on Blu-ray and DVD now.
