Universal Picture and Syfy have teamed up to launch Syfy Films. The new company will develop and produce Syfy-branded material in the world of science fiction, fantasy, supernatural and horror. Two films a year will be released by Universal, beginning in 2012. Universal pictures chairman Adam Fogelson notes in the press release that the films will be “moderately budgeted projects.” Universal will be responsible for distribution, marketing and publicity. Syfy will promote each film across Syfy’s television, online and mobile assets. Although quite successful, most (if not all) of SyFy’s original productions are horribly cheesy and handcrafted for the tele. Who knows if they can change direction for their theatrical releases.
