Horror In Your House: March 27th, 2012

Published

on

A slow week for big horror titles, but there is an interesting Roger Corman documentary, Corman’s World, which is definitely worth a watch for the fans of all things low budget and sleazy. Which should be everyone reading this. Enjoy your week and check out the rest of the releases below.

CAMEL SPIDERS (DVD/Blu-ray) Anchor Bay Home Entertainment

Based on actual creatures that, for years, have tormented our armed forces in the Middle East, Camel Spiders have now invaded the southwestern deserts of the United States, freely hunting for prey and unafraid of any predator – including man. No place is safe, no one is beyond their paralyzing sting. In the end, a small band of hearty fighters are forced to make one last stand against the creatures.

MICAH SAYS: Are these even real?I always thought the pictures of giant Camel Spiders were Web hoaxes circa 2002. Of course, if they were real that would be bad ass. Too bad this movie has awful CGI. CORMAN’S WOLRD (Blu-ray) Anchor Bay

Director Alex Stapleton weaves archival footage following Roger’s illustrious career: From his early days of genre-defining classics including the original Fast and Furious, the original Little Shop of Horrors, The Crybaby Killer, The Intruder, House of Usher, and The Wild Angels (which at that point in 1966 was his 100th film) — with present day video of him and his wife Julie on location still at work as they continue to produce and distribute films outside the studio system: fast, cheap and out-of-this-world!

MICAH SAYS: PICK OF THE WEEK. Sure, it’s not really horror, but I found this doc to be quite interesting and makes for a great double feature with MACHETE MAIDENS UNLEASHED.

DIE – E1 Entertainment

Six people, each on the road to self-destruction, wake up trapped in a surreal facility without knowing how they got there or why. Held captive by a mysterious man, the abductees are subjected to ‘The Trials’, a sadistic experiment in which they are forced to decide each other’s fate over a nerve-racking game of dice.

THE GIRL IN ROOM 2A – Mondo Macabro

For the first time ever on DVD, fully uncut and uncensored this is a classic slice of 1970’s Italian shock cinema. Packed with scary scenes and demented characters, the film is both full-on horror and an intriguing mystery. What is the secret of Room 2A?

GRIMM’S FAIRY TALES – Entertainment One

Evil witches, beautiful princesses, a wicked stepmother and a big bad wolf fill this collection of Faerie Tale Theatre episodes adapted from the Brothers Grimm classics and brought to life with stellar casts… HANSEL AND GRETEL – Left alone in the woods, Hansel (Ricky Schroder) and Gretel (Bridgette Andersen) chance upon a house made of candy, only to become prisoners of a mean old witch (Joan Collins) who wants to fatten them up for supper. RAPUNZEL – In a dark forest, an enchantress (Gena Rowlands) keeps the beautiful, long-haired Rapunzel (Shelley Duvall) hidden inside a tall tower, until a young, handsome prince (Jeff Bridges) finds her and falls in love. RUMPELSTILTSKIN – After helping a young woman (Shelley Duvall) spin straw into gold and become Queen, a menacing little man (Hervé Villechaize) gives her an ultimatum either guess his bizarre name or give up her first-born child. LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD – While on the way to her grandmother’s house, Little Red Riding Hood (Mary Steenburgen) crosses paths with a hungry wolf (Malcolm McDowell) who hatches a plan to eat her.

THE GRUESOME DEATH OF TOMMY PISTOL – Vicious Circle Films

In this outrageously gore-y horror romp, Tommy Pistol is a struggling actor whose career has hit rock bottom. After dozing off in the midst of using a penis pump, Tommy finds himself in a fantasy world where he pursues bloody vengeance against those who’ve put him down – but when he wakes from his dream, he may have to face his own gruesome death.

STRIP NUDE FOR YOUR KILLER (Blu-ray) – Blue Underground

The stunning Edwige Fenech (The Case Of The Bloody Iris, The Strange Vice Of Mrs. Wardh) stars in this infamous shocker that packs more grisly violence and sexual depravity into each frame than most any other film in the entire giallo genre. There’s succulent flesh aplenty as a mysterious killer dressed in black leather and wearing a motorcycle helmet begins butchering beautiful young fashion models with no mercy and one deranged request: Strip Nude For Your Killer! Nino Castelnuovo (THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG) and Femi Benussi (HATCHET FOR THE HONEYMOON) co-star in this sleazy ’70s classic directed by Andrea Bianchi (BURIAL GROUND, MALABIMBA), now presented in a brand-new High Definition transfer from the original uncut and uncensored camera negative!

on

Criterion Collection has announced the upcoming release of The Complete Kubrick Box Set, a 4K + Blu-ray collection that features EVERY SINGLE MOVIE KUBRICK DIRECTED.

“Tracing his evolution from independent maverick to Hollywood rebel to visionary transnational auteur whose every film from the mid-1960s on became a manifesto of a radically new sensibility,” Criterion previews, “The Complete Kubrick brings together the entirety of a body of work that opened popular cinema up to new realms of moral profundity and metaphysical mystery.”

Criterion continues, “Collected for the first time are Kubrick’s thirteen features and three shorts, all restored in 4K, with their original soundtracks alongside the 5.1 mixes, restored and remastered; over twenty-five hours of interviews, documentaries, and behind-the-scenes materials; and deluxe packaging illustrated with rare photographs, artwork, and documents annotated by Kubrick himself, all housed in a singular box inspired by the director’s legendary archive.”

Included in The Complete Kubrick is of course the 1980 horror masterpiece The Shining, but we’re getting more than just the version of the film we’re all deeply familiar with…

Kubrick’s international version of The Shining will also be included in the set, along with a new 4K restoration of Vivian Kubrick’s behind-the-scenes documentary!

The international version of The Shining was cut together by Kubrick for the film’s release outside the United States, and it’s a trimmed down version of the film that runs 115 minutes rather than the standard 144 minutes. Kubrick cut a full 29 minutes out of The Shining in the wake of the film’s U.S. release, and you can watch this video for a rundown of all the changes.

This version of the movie has been released on home video outside the United States, but Criterion’s Complete Kubrick set marks the first time it’s been available on U.S. home video.

The Complete Kubrick will release October 20, 2026. Pre-order yours today.
