This game is particularly interesting because it’s designed by a man — Matt Gilgenbach — who’s struggled with mental illness. He decided to design a game to mirror his lifelong battle, and the result is an delightfully twisted little game with a black and white (and red all over) art style that’s actually pretty great. It’s payoff isn’t immediate, so if you’re looking for a slow burn kind of horror game, this might be for you. Also, it hasn’t released yet, but it should release some time next year.
September was a busy month, with three of the games on this list all releasing within two weeks of each other. Doorways is one of those games (as is Outlast and the next game on this list) and it’s essentially Amnesia, broken up into weird, nightmarish segments. It offers many of the elements we’ve come to expect from survival horror games, like a creepy atmosphere and lots of puzzles, but it also incorporates a more modern trend by throwing you, the player, into dangerous situations unarmed.
