After Frictional Games set the bar astronomically high with The Dark Descent, their collaborative effort with Dear Esther developer The Chinese Room had some big shoes to fill. Unfortunately, thanks to a few curious design decisions, it didn’t quite live up to the now cult classic status of its predecessor. It’s still a stellar horror game with a deft hand in the storytelling department. It might not be nearly as scary as the original, but don’t let that keep you from experiencing it.
While this isn’t entirely a horror game, it is indie and it does have elements of horror. Betrayer is developed by new startup Blackpowder Games, a studio formed from ex-Monolith (Condemned, F.E.A.R.) developers. It brings with it scary monsters, an unsettling atmosphere and a few other staples of the horror genre, mixed with a little Skyrim. Definitely worth checking out.
