Next ‘Doom’ is a Reboot, Will Feature Big Guns and Bigger Monsters

Published

on

Unless you were attending QuakeCon in Dallas the other day, you probably missed out on Bethesda and developer id Software’s presentation of the next Doom game. One thing we learned at the event? Don’t you dare call it Doom 4, because if you do you’ll only be met with hysterical laughter. This game will be a reboot, and if the reactions from those who were lucky enough to see it in person are anything to go by, this game looks like a true follow-up to the acclaimed franchise.

Polygon was at the presentation, where a slew of details were offered about the upcoming game.

For starters, the health and armor pick-ups from the first three games will return. If you were hoping id would employ the health regeneration mechanic now used in most modern shooters, that may be a bit disappointing. Me? I prefer it.

The focuses on big, inventive weapons is still very much a priority, and executive producer Marty Stratton did confirm that we’ll be able to carry them all at once. It sounds like we’ll need them, as the game’s other staple — gargantuan hell-spawn monsters — will also return.

Doom is set in a UAC research facility on Mars. It’s guaranteed to look super pretty thanks to it’s being powered by id Tech 6, or id Tech 666, as the team jokingly refers to it. It also sounds like there is a pretty heavy emphasis on melee combat, and even brutal finishing moves that can be used on enemies, and even bosses. This is very much something I would like to see in action.

Stay tuned for the actual footage, whenever Bethesda feels like showing it to the rest of us. Until then, here’s its E3 announcement trailer.

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78

In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).

Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.

While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.

The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.

Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.

We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
