I weird thing to obsess over, but my brother and myself are pretty huge fans of the Tremors franchise, and have even seen the home video sequels – Tremors II: Aftershocks, Tremors 3: Back to Perfection and Tremors 4: The Legend Begins – many of times.
The one reason, the main reason for the love that we can’t get enough of Michael Gross‘s character, Burt Gummer (aka ‘The Gummer’) in all four films.
A little over a week ago we reported that Don Michael Paul, who helmed both Lake Placid: The Final Chapter and Jarhead 2: Field of Fire, revealed on his blog that he’s already set to get behind the camera for a modern day Tremors.
Our friends at Moviehole have confirmed this, while also adding that Gross will be returning as ‘The Gummer’!
The new film, currently casting for a September kick-off in South Africa (where quite a few of Universal’s recent direct-to-DVD sequels have been shot), is about as much a do-over as “Tron Legacy” or “Star Wars Episode VII”. In other words, it totally bows to the graboid of the original, and that includes paying respect to those who’ve previously done battle with the ‘mother hoppers’. So though there’s a couple of new, over-keen young cats in the film (with all their whiz-bang modern-day – didn’t have that in 1990 stuff – contraptions) there’s one big stout link to the original films – and that’s Burt Gummer (or ‘The Gummer’ as he’s nicknamed in this). And as if we’d want it any other way, Michael Gross is back to reprise the role of the heavily-armed monster-buster.
To further prove their point, they also say that the script’s shooting title is “Tremors 5”.
From what it sounds like, this is another direct-to-disc sequel, which is a bummer, actually. But if it stars Michael Gross, you can count on me being the first in line to rent it (they have lines to rent things?).
