Anne Rice’s “The Vampire Chronicles” Finally Happening…

Published

on

We’ve been reporting since 2009 that Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles were held at Universal Pictures – and at one point they were targeting Robert Downey Jr. as the new Lestat.

It was acquired by Universal Pictures for Brian Grazer and Imagine Entertainment, a new article at Variety states, with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci on board to produce. It sounds as if they’re attempting a “Universal Monsters”/Avengers-style reboot here, as well. People have been venomously against Kurtzman and Orci, who are behind some of the worst summer blockbusters in years, from The Amazing Spider-Man to Transformers and Star Trek. Orci is also directing The Mummy for Universal.

The deal includes the adapted screenplay for “Tale of the Body Thief” written by Rice’s son, author Christopher Rice. Other novels in the series include “Interview with the Vampire” and the upcoming “Prince Lestat.”

An earlier version of the story, “Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles,” starred Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise in 1994. Rice’s “Queen of the Damned,” also part of “The Vampire Chronicles,” starred Aaliyah and Stuart Townsend in 2002.
