During their pre-TGS media briefing, Hideo Kojima took some time to chat about the P.T. interactive teaser that turned out to be a wildly clever and effective reveal of Silent Hills. That creative bit of marketing turned Silent Hills into the biggest story to come out of Gamescom last month, and that’s very impressive if you consider all the horror gaming goodness that was present at this year’s event.
I wouldn’t normally expect a demo for a horror game that’s only available on a single platform to be downloaded by very many people. Lots of folks don’t like scary games (weirdos), but that hasn’t kept the demo from being downloaded over a million times in just two weeks.
That’s a damn fine debut, even though I’m sure that of all those people, only about a dozen mustered up the willpower to actually solve it.
Lots of folks were bothered by the challenging puzzles, a few of which bordered on the unsolvable. This was done purposefully, as Kojima wanted it to take at least a week to solve — instead, it took about four hours. He also briefly discussed the demo’s frustrating final puzzle, saying there are six “layers” that must be uncovered before the ending reveals itself.
The demo’s gift has long since been unveiled. Feel free to watch it below.
