The ‘Silent Hills’ Demo’s Final Puzzle Solved! Maybe.

Published

on

If you’re not yet familiar with the P.T. “interactive teaser” released during Gamescom last week, it was used to trick us all into thinking we were getting a brand new horror IP, when it really ended up being a clever reveal of Silent Hills. Hideo Kojima was behind it, naturally, and unless you’ve gotten some hands-on time with it, you might not be fully aware of how frustratingly difficult it can be.

The demo covers a single L-shaped hallway and a bathroom, yet somehow, the team that made it was able to transform that simple environment into something that’s both familiar, yet at the same time terrifying and unpredictable. It can be downloaded from the PlayStation Store, takes a little over an hour to complete, and wastes nary a second with hand-holding.

The game is brimming with challenging puzzles, with many of them requiring a near-superhuman level of attention to detail to solve.

There’s one puzzle in particular that waits at the end of the demo, long after the wills of even the bravest of gamers have been broken. The puzzle was solved within hours of the demo’s release, but until now we’ve had no idea how.

If you’ve been having trouble solving the final puzzle, YouTuber TheGrateDebate has you covered in a video that goes super in-depth in solving the puzzle once and for all. It sounds like coming up with the solution was a group effort, and requires the player to do a number of things. I can’t say I fully get this, but I do know that solving it has something to do with a clock alarm and taking the time to listen to a certain number of baby laughs.

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78

In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).

Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.

While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.

The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.

Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.

We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
