I was recently introduced to musician Larry Russell through Reddit, specifically for his album Nocturne. While I don’t remember the exact headline of the thread, I remember that it said it was reminiscent of Akira Yamaoka‘s work on the Silent Hill franchise. Being a Silent Hill fanatic, my interest was immediately piqued and I knew that I had to give it a listen. Just over 30 minutes later, I finished the entire album without realizing it. Yes, there are definitely elements of Yamaoka’s work here but I also hear those wonderful atmospheres that were created by Angelo Badalamenti for the Twin Peaks series.
I wanted to share this album with you since I feel that it’s perfectly suited for the impending cold of winter. There are times that this album shrieks and howls, calling to mind the bitingly frigid gusts of wind that are approaching. However, it also has a warmth, reminding me that I can stay inside, a windowpane away from the cold.
You can listen to the album below and download it with a “Name Your Price” model, which means you can snag it for free. However, if you’re so inclined, definitely throw a little bit towards Russell. This is a man creating art and he should get recognized.
