“Barkira” is a strange byproduct of the internet, where artists have been redrawing iconic moments from the seminal manga “Akira” with Simpson’s characters. “Barkira” is a crowd-sourced project inspired by artist Ryan Humphrey’s art (see below) and spearheaded by cartoonist James Harvey. With over 500 hundred artists worldwide, each contributor works in his or her own style, with the central concept being that this is “The Simpsons” meets “Akira”. The project is not for profit, which allows the tumblr to avoid all legal recourse, at least thus far.
So far, Ralph Wiggum is Akira, Bart is Keneda, and Milhouse is Tetsuo. The tumblr is literally something else. It’s achieved the herculean task of finishing the first three volumes, already. Check out how their work compares to the original.
