Universal Pictures has been developing a modern day take on The Creature From the Black Lagoon for decades. And while we’ve seen multiple Mummy movies, The Wolfman and various incarnations of Dracula and Van Helsing, the Creature has yet to make it back to theaters.

With the Universal Monsters shared universe in motion, starting with the god-awful Dracula Untold, Universal is developing out new features for all of their monsters. While they attempt to keep everything under their hat, we do know that Uni is planning to resurrect The Mummy on June 24, 2015, and then will tell of The Wolf Man, The Invisible Man, Frankenstein, and even The Bride of Frankenstein.

Creature From the Black Lagoon hasn’t been mentioned, until now.

This tracking board is claiming that Uni has their eyes on Scarlett Johansson for the remake.

A remake technically been on the slate since 1982, add the site, with original director Jack Arnold in talks to return. The project was ultimately scrapped, with John Carpenter, Gary Ross and Breck Eisner and Guillermo Del Toro each developing separate versions of the project over the next two decades.

The last we heard was that Dave Kajganich, who wrote the Daniel Craig-Nicole Kidman thriller The Invasion several years ago, was penning the screenplay. Bruce Eisner was once attached to direct the redo of the 1954 film that centered on a prehistoric water-breathing humanoid monster that lived in a remote Amazonian river and a group of scientists that want to study him.

The current remake is taking shape at Universal, with Larger Than Life and Strike Entertainment producing. Gary Ross, Robin Bissell, Marc Abraham and Eric Newman will produce, with a screenplay by Jeff Blitz, Gary Ross, Tedi Sarafian and Paul Schering. Leslie Urdang, Jeff Kirschenbaum and Jay Polidoro will oversee development for the studio.

In addition to Leigh Whannell’s upcoming Universal Monsters movie Wolf Man, Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel) has also joined the cast of Weapons, THR has announced tonight.

Weapons is the new horror movie from New Line Cinema and director Zach Cregger (Barbarian), with Julia Garner joining the previously announced Josh Brolin (Dune 2).

The upcoming Weapons is from writer/director Zach Cregger, who will also produce alongside his Barbarian producing team: Roy Lee of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon also produces.

The Hollywood Reporter teases, “Plot details for Weapons are being kept holstered but it is described as a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.”

Cregger was a founding member and writer for the New York comedy troupe “The Whitest Kids U’Know,” which he started while attending The School of Visual Arts. The award-winning group’s self-titled sketch comedy show ran for five seasons on IFC-TV and Fuse. He was also a series regular on Jimmy Fallon’s NBC series “Guys with Kids” and the TBS hit series “Wrecked,” and was featured in a recurring role on the NBC series “About a Boy.”

Weapons will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
